HRT query
« on: August 17, 2015, 01:06:25 PM »

Hello everybody. I'm hoping that somebody can give me some advice in my search for the most appropriate HRT for me. I'm 52 and had about 2 periods within the last 12 months. I've tried Femseven patches in the past, but they didn't stick well and I'm currently on Cyclo Progynova tablets. I've just finished one pack and on my 7 day tablet break at the moment. I suffer with IBS and have a hiatus hernia, felt quite nauseous the last 3 weeks and bad PMT symptoms too. Can anybody recommend a "kinder" and "better sticking" patch I could try, as I don't think tablets are agreeing with my stomach problems. I really appreciate any advice as I'm struggling with my low mood and hot flushes/sweating.  Thank you very much in advance. P xx

Hi PMB63 - sorry to hear about your problems with HRT. As there are 7 tablet free days on your HRT this would accentuate any pmt symptoms because you would get a sudden drop in oestrogen as well as the progestogen withdrawal. With all the other hRT types you take the same amount of oestrogen all the time so don't experience that dip in levels.

Many women find that Femoston tablets are better tolerated because the progestogen in them (dydrogesterone) is similar to our own progesterone. You would probably want the 2/10 if you've been taking 2 mg CycloProgynova.

Transdermal HRT (patch or gel) is recommended for those who suffer nausea or stomach problems with tablet HRT. The only combi patch I tried was Evorel sequi which stuck well but the progestogen gave me side effects - mainly headache/migraine.

The other alternative if you want to continue with the transdermal route is to try separate oestrogen and progesterone - so an oestrogen patch such as Estradot changed twice a week - which are very small and stick well (I use these) or oestrogel (applied daily). You would then take a separate progesterone - many of us have utrogestan as this is bio-identical progesterone.

All the different types are listed under HRT preparations sub tab (treatments tab at the top menu). http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/what_to_do_at_menopause.php

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for your informative reply Hurdity. That makes a lot of sense and I feel clearer in my mind now. I'm seeing GP on Thursday again and have a better idea now. Thank you so much again.  :thankyou: P xx
