Shame on you English ladies....but it's all due to change with a 5p a bag charge.

We have had the charge up here for a while now and our usage it would seem has plummeted. I never ever pay for a bag now. I have my collection of bags for life for my weekly shop and a little nylon one in my handbag for bits and bobs.

How do you think you will react to paying for a bag....pay or take your own.....every week...oh and remember.

I always use the bags for life when I do the weekly supermarket shop but do tend to forget when I just pop into the little local supermarket. I reckon my memory will improve re taking a bag with me once I have to pay!!  I wonder if the bag manufacturers will go out of business?

Doubt if they will go out of business because bags for life don't last that long!  We have all types of bags around the house and a survey apparently says that every household has at least 10 'spare' bags - I think Ireland has been plastic bag-less for years so shoppers have to take their own.

When I un-load the bags I hang them in the porch and try to remember to put them into the boot before the next shopping trip.  We have hessian in various sizes and I use baskets for packing clothes/food in the camper. 

10p ain't much in the scheme of things

It is when you pay it week in and week out.

My memory really improved when the charge came in and apart from that I like the thought of not using them. They can take so long to break down and just pollute our countryside.


Bags for life....pay the first time and when they get a hole in, the supermarket replace free of charge. I keep separate types for different things as I don't want my bread in bags that had a chicken in the week before.

Oh it gets complicated

I have one of those little foldaway bags as well HB in my handbag. Never remember to take it out and am always juggling stuff in my hands coming out of the local shop!

My dear family laughed at me with my little bag. I won't let them use it and they have to either pay or balance while I walk along smugly with my bag

We don't buy chicken from the supermarket  ……… cheap food means cheap production 
We buy from the farm shop or warehouse ……… dependant on what it's to be used for, same with fish although now that DH catches our own 


I have for years been trying to persuade supermarkets to ditch the small plastic bags and use brown paper bags: for bread, veggies, fruits: which will rot down but my suggestions fall on deaf ears  so when shopping, I tend not to use the small plastic bags …….. we need those grocery bags that are used State-side!

I get my groceries delivered and they always put the fruit and veg in brown paper bags. I hate them as they just get put straight into the paper recycling bin. At least I can reuse the plastic bags which is better. Progress! not! Amazing as well how quickly plastic bags do break down - I had a bag full of plastic bags in the loft from when I was clearing it out the last time and kept forgetting to take it down the stairs. When I was loft clearing recently, all the plastic bags had turned into confetti. First time I had seen that. When I started work after I left school, one of the first projects I worked on was to come up with a tough film grade plastic, specifically for plastic bags. How times have changed!

Bramble: offer up the brown bags on freecycle? I would take them from you if I lived close enough! for re-use.  We get our cards in brown bags but these aren't large enough nor strong enough to reuse for much else.  So onto our compost they go.

Those bags that have turned into confetti are biodegradable ;-) - doing what they were designed to do!  I had some do exactly that, I bought some, put them under the stairs because I didn't want to use them up  ; forgot them for 5 years  and found, yep, confetti - what a waste  except they went into our compost.

What would you use brown paper grocery bags for CLKD? I can't think of any use for them. They are about the same size as an ordinary plastic carrier bag.

Groceries  ………. or for filling when I'm in the camper with used clothing or rubbish generally ………. or for putting in the bottoms of plant pots before filling with compost and plants ……..

Bramble - I use the brown paper bags for shredded paper which then goes in the recycling.

Shredded for hamster cages?  Bran tubs.  Pass the parcel

I've got a little nylon foldaway shopping bag in my handbag. Washes well too.  Got big canvas bags for bigger shopping though. Messages I get delivered, without bags.

We're not allowed to put any shredded paper in our recycling as it's too small for the "pick ups" to pick up apparently :-(
