Surges and Setbacks Are So Disheartening!
« on: July 13, 2015, 08:56:17 PM »

Good evening ladies. I am in need of a rant and I know you will understand.

I am post meno and have been using Evorel Conti 50 mcg patches for four months. After three months I had some peculiar spotting  so for the last four weeks I have been cutting the patch thereby reducing my dose to 44 mcg. I now seem to be having horrendous anxiety surges every day beginning in the late afternoon and lasting until bedtime. Today has been a perfect example, a bit edgy but not too bad until about 4 o'clock when I had a horrible surge of anxiety including palpitations, gurgling and rumbling tummy ( which required a loo visit, sorry if tmi ), sweating and headache, just full of panic really. I still feel rough so I plan to have an early night and hope that helps.

I am so fed up of these surges and how they make me feel, I am completely floored by them and they seem to come out of nowhere. I had them before and since HRT but I was starting to feel better and thought they were behind me.

So disheartened and frustrated so I'm off to bed and hoping for a better day tomorrow.

Goodnight ladies, it helps so much to know you are there and that you understand the power, and dare I say it, the vindictiveness of our hormones.

Take care everyone and sweet dreams!

Yep.  Sounds familier.  How's your diet generally maybe your body is hungry mid-afternoon?

Hi Kathleen. I know what you mean, although different symptoms. I have been on the same patch for about 6weeks - just a quarter and now on a third of a patch. Apart from a couple of initial blips I have been feeling  very good and jinxed it by thinking how good I felt - today I woke up as flat as a pancake and with little zest or energy for anything! I could hardly bring myself to smile. Let's hope a good sleep works well for us both x

Hello CLKD and Sunnydays and thank you for your replies.

Such is the randomness of meno that after a rotten start to the day I began to feel calmer from mid morning. Oh well, onwards and upwards I suppose!

Take care.

Hi there, i am also on these patches, started off on 1/2 patch now up to a full one. I have been on them for about 3 years now and most of the time feel ok, however i do have what i call my little blipps and it can be anything from anxiety, palpatations, nausea etc. I get the feeling that although HRT helps it doesn't stop things completely. xx

It's not a cure all. I started with anxiety after being on HRT for a few years.

It controls something's but no matter how much we swallow, rub on or stick on its not going to solve all the problems.

Oh how I wish it would.....I would do anything to be rid of anxiety.

Kathleeen - maybe you are one of those for whom continuous progestogen does not suit you - especially as it's the synthetic norethisterone which is notorious for giving sside effects? I know it suits some women but when I tried Eovrel sequi when i first started HRT I had terrible headaches etc with the Evorel (on the prog part) and there is no way that I would want to take this continuously.

The reduced oestrogen might also be having an effect but the reduction is very small. Having said that I started getting flishes back when I reduced from 50 mcg to 37.5 mcg - within 2-3 months so went back to 50 mcg. Could you not perhaps think about and discuss a different type of HRT with your doc, and have you been checked re the spotting and your uterus lining? Did you try any other HRT types before the Evorel conti?

I agree we can't expect HRT to make us feel perfect all the time, but you want to feel better taking it, than you do off it for most of the time and if a different preparation can help then maybe try?

Kathleen I would echo what Hurdity said and ask did you go back to your GP and mention the spotting?  Three months isn't very long in terms of the body adjusting to HRT so the spotting may just have been a one off side effect - but you won't know unless you discuss it with a GP.  I had spotting with my HRT meds and other side effects too ... I'm 3 months into my current HRT meds.  Some of the side effects have gone and some I'm still experiencing - but I'm putting up with them at the moment as it's improved my quality of life overall at the moment.

If you go to your GP and the spotting is an issue, another way of dealing with the anxiety would be to take some beta blockers - I've started taking these regularly recently and they do seem to be helping.

It's really best to get some input from a GP rather than adjusting a medication ad-hoc if you possibly can.

Hello jgr, honeybun, Hurdity and Greenfields.

Many thanks ladies for your comments.

I have had the spotting checked and all is well so that is a relief. I was prescribed Beta Blockers a while ago but I have managed without so perhaps I should include these if I continue with a reduced patch. As so many of us know it is hard to strike a balance.

Honeybun - like you I would love to be rid of the anxiety. ( I like the comment " I'd eat furniture polish if I thought it would make me feel better ". Stand up and take a bow GypsyRoseLee. Lol ).

Wishing you all well and once again thank you for your responses, much appreciated.

Take care.

Oh you sound like me - I was prescribed beta blockers and didn't use them for a while! I've since found that they are helpful and I've started taking them regularly.
