Menopause Clinic - anyone been to one?
« on: June 26, 2015, 09:54:15 AM »

Right.

I've had enough of sleepless nights, mood swings and hot flushes (or 'power surges' as my mum calls them)  >:(

So I have booked yet another GP appointment (he must think I fancy him the amount of times I've seen him recently) and am going to ask him to refer me to the menopause clinic in Nottingham. Anyone had any experience of a menopause clinic?

Thanks in advance

Yes, but I don't think mine was the best experience.  I was seen by a stand-in female doctor who was probably in her 30's, so couldn't empathise as she wasn't there, herself, yet.  She just said things I knew already and wasn't particularly helpful.  I wanted someone to take the lead and suggest a way forward.  Instead, I felt like the one directing the conversation.   But if I'd been seen by the regular person, I've no doubt it would have been much more satisfactory.   Do try it, Sausage.  These clinics are there for us ladies!

Definitely try it. I was lucky & saw the consultant at mine. She was 50ish & absolutely lovely. My GP used her herself, so knew who to ask for, rather than just a generic letter to the department.

Thanks for the replies. I just want to explore all options before I go down the grin and bear it route.

I used to attend the one at John Radcliffe in Oxford. They were really good but didn't change what my doc had already put me on. I just really wanted to make sure that I was getting the best HRT for me.

Saw the doctor yesterday...again!

I asked him to refer me to the menopause clinic which he did straight away. I also came away clutching a prescription for more beta blockers for the palpitations, co-codamol for being old and creaky and sleeping pills....

I feel like my mother.

Anyway, I'll let you all know my experience of the clinic - will be nice to speak to 'experts'  :)

Glad you got a quick referral Sausage. It took me two years of relentless badgering and I only finally got referred because I went when a trainee doc was on duty.  ;D

Such a wide range of pills - did he consider the issue could be hormonal rather than loading you up with drugs?

My GPs were clueless. Over time I saw 4 at the practice, 2 admitted they were "out of their depth", by the 4th I was ready to stage a sit in unless I got the prescription which I told him I wanted (Utrogestan and estrogel). Fortunately he was very compliant  :)  I did get a referral to the meno clinic though and found the GP there very helpful and clued up. It's so much more rewarding talking to someone who knows their stuff rather  than a GP furiously googling for answers  (I can do that myself).

Do tell the meno clinic what your GP has prescribed and why, they can then decide which drugs you need alongside the hormones and which can be easily replaced (just to stop you rattling !)
