Prof Studd and utrogestan 100 on days 1-7
« on: June 25, 2015, 09:36:23 PM »

Hi all....I'm just reading a bit before my hrt review on Monday and my research led to prof Studd's website where he says "The best method of taking bioidentical hormones would in my view be Oestrogel 2-3 measures daily with the possible addition of transdermal testosterone gel and then Utrogestan 100 mgs daily for the first 7 days of each calendar month. This would bring about a regular scanty bleed on about the 10th day of each calendar month."

This is clearly different to using 200 utrogestan on days 15-26 on a cycle. I wondered if anyone is on this regime and their experience on it? Also would it be poss to exchange the oestrogen gel for the estrodot patch with no testosterone? (Also what does testosterone add to hrt? Sorry for my ignorance). I'd be v grateful for any views. Many thanks as always, kitty xx

I'm afraid you won't be given this regime under the NHS as it is off license.  Prof Studd's patients are seeing him privately and he will be doing regular scans to check whether the womb lining is ok and the NHS can't afford to offer this.   200mg of Utrogestan for days 15-26 is the licensed dosage with oestrogen alongside in either pil/patch or gel form. Testosterone is also not available on the NHS but is said to improve libido and energy so some women want to use this. DG x

You can get testosterone on the nhs but it has to be approved by a gynae or meno clinic i know several ladies who have got it

Kittyjay, this is a tried and tested regime that Prof. Studd usually recommends, particularly for people (like myself) who are intolerant to synthetic progesterone or who had bad PMT when they had natural periods hence the lower dose of utrogestan.  I must say that my bleeds are far from scant!  I have a horrendous intolerance to artificial progestins even though I never had any problems at all with periods or PMT when I was producing my own progesterone.  I can hardly take any artificial progestins at all and I am currently trying to stretch to a 6 week cycle using this method and taking the utrogestan vaginally.  I also take testosterone but I can't say it has made a huge amount of difference to me but everyone is different.  I can't see why you would not be able to use the estrodot patch if you prefer it but some medics think that the gel has a better delivery system.  Do you have any problems with intolerance?

I also never had scanty bleeeds on 7 days of Utro in fact Im convinced it was too little as I was getting big bleeds every mth then breakthrough bleeding so had to go onto a longer regime to make the bleeds less, the lining was not really shedding enough in my case on the 7 days, thats why its very important to get a regular scan if you are going to use the Utro in this or any other manner that is not prescribed.

Thanks ladies- Mary G- I tried a few progesterones before finding utrogestan which does seem to suit me but I need to stop taking it continuously. Cassie - Im on NHS so doubt I'll get offered regular scans as DG also said......Think I'll ask for days 15-26. Thanks very much ladies. Back to watching Glastonbury :) xx

I have 100mg of Utrogestan prescribed and was told to take it every day alongside Estrogel. I have decided to give my body 5 days rest from both every 4 weeks, it just feels better for me.  You can alter your dose yourself, but it's the testosterone you may struggle to get prescribed (How is Hurdity getting on with this I wonder?).  I occasionally take DHEA with is a precursor hormone and can increase the level of testosterone if required. (I buy this as a supplement from Biovea).
