I had a very reassuring appt with GP yesterday. I asked if this "loss of self" ever goes away and she was adamant that it does. She said that the whole "change" / menopause process can take 10-15 years (probably from our early forties) and that many women have problems that are disruptive enough for them to have to give up work or go part time. Some, she said, lose the self-confidence to drive, socialise, deal with every-day things. She also said that anxiety and panic are problems too. But she did reassure me that it does improve and gave me an example of a senior medic who completely lost herself for a while and had to give up her job and couldn't even drive anymore but who is now back at work and fine. I believed what she said, she was very reassuring that there is light at the end of the tunnel even though it might take a long time. I could have hugged her! I just thought I'd share this encouragement with those of you who are suffering and those whose GP isn't as helpful.
