Prolonged period
« on: May 17, 2015, 09:25:23 AM »

My last period was a couple of weeks late and then I started spotting, I thought maybe it was a light period.  I was so wrong, after a week I am having a very heavy period.  This happened a year ago when I bled for 53 days.  Really hope this doesn't happen again.  Not so concerned this time round but still difficult especially with work.  Anyone had this type of bleeding during perimenopause?

I have had this before infact I think I am heading for it again. Last period was December time, but this last week I have very slight staining- yellowish/very light brown, sore breasts and PMT. I have had this for 4 days but so far no sign of a proper period. Is this your experience- was the spotting yellowish/brown in the week before it developed into a heavy period?

Mine was a very light pink/peachy colour.  It lasted about a week and then wham a heavy period.  I am dreading it going on like it did before.

When did it last happen to you?  Mine was just over a year ago.

You have my sympathy, I have just had a week of spotting , getting heavier,  followed by a period which is still going on. I don't know how long it is going on for either. It's the not knowing, and the thought of it going on for weeks.
I do hope it doesn't go on like it did before for you.

fingers crossed

Mine was last Autumn. I think it is like it wants to start, but there aren't quite enough hormones to start it.

Yes that is what I thought, and I suppose because it is late there is more blood built up.

What I have noticed in these delayed cycles is that I have more days of ovulatory type mucus all over the place at random times rather than mid cycle. Anyone else have this? Sometimes I have it for 2 or 3 days and then again a week or so later. I think this is several attempts to ovulate with no success.

The other thing that might be helpful is to know from other ladies whether periods in peri, especially late ones, start with spotting rather than getting going as normal. It may be the norm and we are taking it to be pathological if you see what I mean.

Yes would be good to know it's normal.

When I was peri menopausal my periods were totally erratic. AFter I had my son at the age of 33 my periods never settled down. I had long gaps between periods, episodes of spotting which sometimes led to a full period or just trickled on. Sometimes barely a week between periods which resulted in very light spotting and bleeding. I had quite a bit of brown discharge and strange mucus at the beginning or end of a period. I had constant headaches and my breasts were often very tender - I was in my mid 30s and kept hoping these symptoms were because I was pregnant!!! I don't think there is any real pattern to how any women's peri stage will progress.
I had a D&C with investigations when I was 35 and then my periods stopped completely.  They did get going again after 4-5 months but about 6 months later blood tests showed I was peri menopausal and I was given HRT.

Prolonged heavy bleeding and unusual pain should always be investigated.  DG x
