Hi Jaki,

Thanks for your post.  You're right....I'm seriously thinking now I should see a gynae privately as I just don't know what's going on with me at the moment!

It sounds like you've had a terrible time over the last few years. Having the op will definitely take a weight off your shoulders.  My ops both went really well, so please don't worry about it (I know it's hard not to though!). As you say, it's just getting the balance right afterwards.  Hopefully you won't have to wait too long now. Please let me know how you get on & if you need to ask anything at all xx :)

Hi again Linsey,

I'm ok thanks, I'm going to go to the doctors next week & ask to have hormone tests & see a specialist. I've been reading up on whether I may need progesterone too as I just don't think the balance is right at all. If there could be one pill that sorts everything, it would be amazing! How are you getting on now?

Xxxx 😊

Hi. Im good thanks, some days i get lots of flushes other days none, kind of accepted thats how it is, as there is a limit to the level of hrt i would be allowed.

Glad you are going back to gp, what i have learned is to do my own research re meds and then discuss, or they try to fob you off with the cheapest there was no way i was allowing that.

Hurdity put up a thread giving feedback on a private appoint search for it or ask her what is was called, said she was prescribed tesostrone as well, from what i read on treatments tab at top of screen, surgical meno ladies should be offered this as well.

Maybe look into it all the types and discuss with gp.  Whatever happens dont get fobbed off, life is too short and precious to acceot feeling crap.

Good luck

Hi again Chuckers,

Thanks for your reassurance, it is so hard not to worry!! I'm glad you feel so well after your ops, it does settle my mind and remind me why I'm doing it. You're doing all the right things, too, by the sounds of it - I found the more info I got, the better it was as I could actually ask questions rather than just do the nodding-dog thing and leave the surgery wondering what I was putting in my body this time - and all this does affect your quality of life so much! I also did do the Dr Heather Currie email thing via this site (I think it costs about £15/20 or so) and she was great - very informative - which I found very useful to take to my GP and then the gynae once I got the appointment.

I'd love to know how you get on - keep us posted?  :) xx

Jaki
Have you looked at the hysterectomy association website, you should find some support there for your impending op.

Ive had hysterectomy by keyhole in 2013 then ovaries out in 2014, my only advice is to take time for your recovery.

Hi Lynsey,

Thanks for that - I'm going to look it up. Must admit I do feel pretty unsettled by the whole idea!! Did your recovery take a long time, out of curiosity, as that really is the bit I'm most dreading... and do you feel glad you did it?! ??? xx

Hi Jaki

Here the tale of my op, classic case of dont do what i done, listen to your body, you get one chance to recover dont mess it up.

Had laparoscopic hyster in may 13 aged 43, retained ovaries at that point, surgeon  went in via belly button and i have two really tiny scars hidden if in a bikini.  When i had my ovaries out a year later he went back in at the same points to minimise scarring.  I was lucky pain wise after i left hospital both times i took paracetamol only once and that was it.

Recovery on the whole was okay ish but could have been shorter.  I was in hospital 2 nts, one if which required a catheter overnight.  I was told to keep mobile in discharge so got a stopwatch and every time i was up and about kept a running total of how long for.  By day 5 post op i was 5hrs mobile got carried away decided to clean 2 toilets and wash basins despite everyone telling me not to.  BIG MISTAKE.  Ended up almost collapsing onto tiled floor had my husband not caught me, resulting in back to bed for two days and felt like starting again when i got up after that.  Stopwatch was taken off me at that point.

Things progressed ok after i stopped trying to do too much.  Mostly i just stayed at home and walked on my treadmil starting at a snails pace.  Think cos my scars were almost at bith sides of groin this pulled more with leg movement as opposed to a horizontal scar.  I found getting in and out of the car uncomfortable as its quite low and sporty.

I have had 4 gynae surgeries over the years and everytime my bowels rebel, so i would suggest before you go into hospital hve a good clear out as pain killers can make you constipated. Take a laxative when u get home for a couple of weeks, i ended up with piles which wasnt great.  As well as a laxative have a supply of mebeverine (used for IBS) this relieved the pain that comes from trapped wind.

i drove the car at around 5 weeks as its automatic driving itself was ok.  However as a passenger i swung round both legs together to get out of car, as a driver this went out of the window and i opened the door put one foot on ground one still inside the car and  somehow twisted myself, searing pain.  This was my own fault and wouldnt have happened if i had taken more care.  Tip - legs together, swing out together.

Swelling took around 6wks to subside, my aunt had horizontal scar and wasnt as swollen as me cos with laparoscopic surgery they pump more gas into the abdomen as they have less room to manouvere.

I was off work 10wks in total could prob have gone back at 8wks on reduced duties but gp had already signed me off following the car incident so i just took the opportunity to recover properly.  It was a lovely summer so i made the most of it in the garden with my daughter.

Hope i havent put you off, that certainly wasnt my intention, best thing i ever done and dont regret it.  If you have any questions i would be happy to answer them.

Any idea when your  op will be?

Hi Linsey,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back, so much going on here (we've had some close family bereavement this year and it's taking time to get anywhere back to normal). Thanks so much for your advice - I am dreading the recovery more than the op as I'm not good at doing nothing and taking it easy, and I like being on my fee and exercising too, so I get your impatience to get back to normal sooner than you could - thanks for the warning! I'm on the waiting list so no idea yet, but think the op will be this autumn... I know it's the answer for me, as I'm now back in chemical menopause and feeling so much better than I did, I can't go back to that horrible cycle again and all that went with it. I'm glad you feel it's the best thing you ever did, that's such good news, and very reassuring. Everyone tells me they don't regret it one bit... I'm clinging on to that!! xx

Surgical menopause
« Reply #26 on: August 21, 2017, 04:12:58 PM »

Hi everyone....

I'm still having problems with the surgical menopause.  My hair is falling out now (female pattern baldness) and I'm waiting to see a dermatoligist.  My hair seems to get much thinner on HRT and when I up the dose I get a horrible metallic taste in my mouth.  I've tried cutting the dose, but then I get really bad back pain & feel very cold, night sweats, insomnia - you name it!

I've asked the gynaecologist & Dr countless number of times if I can try progesterone too - to balance me out, but the answer is always a complete no!  I'm so fed up with not feeling myself....

Thanks

Sorry, forgot to say as well I have low b12 - now having injections, low thyroid, low folic acid & low vit D - now on medication for.  Is this due to estrogen being too high or low??  Also, when I'm on the estrogen I have scar tissue pain & I also have an L5 haemangioma on my spine - which I read somewhere could be caused by estrogen??  I have pain all down my left side.  Could this be the haemangioma??

HELP!!!!

Thanks,

It's five years since my hysterectomy(kept ovaries). I have tried estradot patches different strengths and always felt worse after taking them, more anxiety and panic attacks. I tried divigel and same reaction. I know a lot of the ladies here are a lot more clued in when it comes to hrt, and i'm probably not giving it enough time when I try it, but the symptoms are unbearable and I really don't think I can keep going on the patch for months without having a complete meltdown. I know your health is your wealth but every visit to my doc costs €50 and that doesn't include prescription which I also have to pay for. I'm on disability so funds are tight. really at my wits end and don't know what to do  :'(
