Burning mouth syndrome
« on: March 26, 2015, 03:06:30 PM »

I'm having a right day if it today

Went to my dentist as last Monday I thought I'd burnt 2 area of the roof of my mouth, they weren't healing and I couldn't brush the teeth they were next to and eating has been difficult

She said she thinks it's Burning Mouth Syndrome and is referring me to a tissue specialist at the  hospital to rule out anything sinister I guess.  I said my throat feels sore and she had already noticed more 'burns' forming at the back of my throat, she asked my medical history and I said my recent things and she confirmed its a symptom of the good 'ole menopause ! Luckily I've been using the gel she recommends (gingigel)

It makes sense now, the sore tongue, the odd taste coming and going, these symptoms are getting ridiculous now

Has anyone else been diagnosed with this ? Xx

Not diagnosed but I find that certain food stuffs can hurt the moment I bite into them.  Chocolate, bananas, some biscuits …. but not every day  ::) ……. perhaps jot down what you eat and what affects your mouth?  I can eat choc. croissants for breakfast for days then suddenly OUCH and I have to spit it out.   :-[ ……… and my gums feel 'sore' all the while however much I keep my mouth clean ……… I ate a grapefruit with sugar on earlier and that was absolutely fine.

These are small (but large to the mouth) area where the skin comes off, so it's raw , the only thing I could tolerate ok was Jaffa cakes, funny thing is I very rarely eat chocolate but last week I really craved the stuff xx

It's awful at times isn't it.  I hadn't had a Jaffa cake for years until recently, a friend opened a packet  ;D and strangely/not, I didn't get the burning. >phew<

I have allergic rhinitis which means my tongue is almost continually scraping the top of my mouth  :( which itches.  Today down my throat feels 'saw::) sore - but I've given my gums and mouth a Very Good Cleaning and I think my mouth is now too clean ………

Do you have to gargle regularly?

I haven't been told to, I'm being treated for gum disease ( convinced meno related) and was told last year to not worry about mouth wash just concentrate on my intense cleaning regime.  And today my regular dentist asked if I mouthwash and I said no because of what the hygienist said, she said that was fine, she just wondered if I'd burnt it using one,

I read up about it, and it says to chew sugar free gum to encourage more saliva (seems my mouth has dried up now too along with everything else)
Sunday my lips were so dry, I was constantly rubbing balm on them

Have a look at the ingredients in your toothpaste.. If it has Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in it change to one that is SLS free.

SLS is corrosive, it might not be the cause of your mouth problems but it will aggravate it.

It's put into floor cleaners to make them foam. Not a good thing to be putting in a sore mouth.

I was told by the hygienist to use Colgate (fluoride)
I used to use sensodyne but yesterday my dentist said go back to sensodyne now as it has fluoride
She thinks it's because of 'dry mouth'

Sensodyne Gentle Whitening does not have SLS in it.

Both of my children have a dreadful allergic reaction to SLS. It causes huge ulcers.

Might not solve the problem but might give you a better chance of healing.
