I turned 55 this week and think I am finally reaching the end of the peri-menopause journey. My question is about periods - they are now very infrequent and so light they are really only spotting and can be managed with a panty liner. Is this the same for others? - some of mine are now only 2-3 days in length.

Hi Machair,

Your experience is much the same as mine.  They just petered out, getting lighter and lighter, until they stopped.  I had my last one at 56 and half and they were also very irregular towards the end, and like you only lasting a couple of days.

Don't worry, it all sounds pretty normal to me.

 Thank you rosebud -56 1/2 is a while to go for me yet! I guess I was regular till 53 so maybe I am not finished yet. Were you regular until your mid fifties too? It's strange because you never know when your last period is until a year or so later. I am very hot at night again- boiled in fact- so I think things are changing. Very anxious too for no reason which is horrid.

Being used to quite heavy periods this is such a change which is why I worry I suppose.

Strangely I was irregular as a young women (4 to 6 wk cycle) but then 28 days after I had the children.  I suppose the irregularity started again about 2-3 years before my periods stopped.  But there are no rules in this game.

I am 44 but the women in my family seem to stop their periods very young. My cousin was only 29. My Aunt 38. My other cousin 42.

These last few months my periods have been much, much lighter. More heavy spotting than anything and only lasting 3 days maximum. I can get away with just 3-4 regular tampons (always needed 'super' before) and a couple of panty liners. I am assuming this means they are trailing off and will end fairly soon as I'm quite 'old' to still being having periods, for the women in my family anyway.

Mine are totally irregular, I used to be every 21 days, then last year it was every 10 days, then I went 3 months without one, then I came on and now it has been 2 months and still no sign yet, going on holiday next week just hope I don't start then as that will be awful.......... it's awful not knowing.
