Headaches
« on: March 22, 2015, 04:52:44 PM »

Hi

Started getting a lot of strange headaches, sometimes at the very back of my head or at the sides above my temples, like an awful sharp pain which is intermittent, been taking paracetamol or asprin which sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't, these pains are coming and going and at different side of head or at back, could they be anxiety or hormone related? has anybody had similar.

Im seeing anxiety counceller Tues will ask to see dr straight after just to mention it x

Mention it to the counsellor.  Neck tension and stress can cause headache symptoms.  My shoulders go up to my ears sometimes and that causes pain in the back of my neck.  I get over that by putting my chin onto my chest, then lifting the head gently and turning to the left, slowly and pause; then to the right, slowly and pause.  Back to the front and relax.

Hi karenja

Sorry to hear about your headches - rotten aren't they? Always get new and persistent headaches checked out. However they are often connected with hormone disturbances unfortunately. I mentioned my migraines to my doctor and she just shrugged - thought it might be when my patch was running out of oestrogen (it's not!) which wasn't very helpful when I'm feeling rubbish. If you take painkillers too often you can get rebound headaches ie the headache returns until you take more painkillers. When I get migraines I try to limit the painkillers for this reason as the headache usually lasts for around 3 days including at night. I've just (I think) managed to shake one off now that started on Friday...

Have you started or stopped taking any other supplements or medication recently which might be causing them? Hope you are keeping a diary of your symptoms and what you take because I know you have tried and take quite a variety of different products, some of which may interact with each other.

Yes I agree with CLKD about the neck tension too - chin to chest is always good!

As Taz says headaches CAN be caused with Nerve stress  or a holding yourself so tightly would up
All your nerves in your body are at attention. If normal panadols etc dont work have u tried Mysindanol
I hope its OK to write that? The Blue pakt with the sleepy bit in. MY Bobles sufferes from bad stress hadaches
Tests nothing wrong. He takes one at night he sleep sounder not moving around(hes a bad back) his headache
Eases and sometimes goes. Also a visit to  Chiro with GPs say so can help they dont wrench your kneck
Those days are long gone. They 100% take an xray first to see if theres a problem keck out of aline
I swear by them as does my entire family. So does my GP he can do it himself and has done. See ur GP ok xxx
I have to add NOT all is meno related. We tend if we are going through bad times to blame everthing on meno.
Sometimes its just age or weve slept wrong and we dont know or plain nervy stress.

I think you are right Suzi Q - we are quick to blame hormones and HRt for headaches but mine have no real rhyme or reason. I do think that posture and relaxation is important to stop tension building and I often find a poor nights sleep triggers a headache - possibly because I tense up when I'm tired.
My sinuses are very sensitive as well and I think atmospheric changes can be a trigger - central heating and even the air con in the car can dry me out and make my head ache.
I thought my headaches would be better when I came off HRT but they got worse - I'm now back on HRt and I am getting fewer headaches.  My problem now is I've taken too many aspirin and Ibuprofen and I'm being treated for a suspected stomach ulcer so I can now only take paracetamol or the combo of codeine and paracetamol which I find doesn't work that well.  You have to very careful with codeine as well as it is addictive!!!

Hi Dancing
It is easy to blame meno for everything and also at times it can be a bit dangerous when in doubt GP asap
Good tip with sinus headaches we used them when I was nursing put your fingertips on each side of the bottom of your nostril and rub roundwise med it releases tension. Also get your finger along your sinus can and stroke firmly
From top of the nose under the eye towards your ears firmly but not hard.
Feel the base of  your skull find the ege just behind your ears but below them on the bones
Then with ur fingertips side rub round ways onEither side of your base of the skull. These are pressure points
It relaxes the nerves@muscles and loosens them But its defo no pain if it hurts STOP.
If I turn aircon on and beleive me in QLD when its 34C at 9pm u need it I cough and my nose is stuffed up too.
I wont take Ibufrofen and also NOT codeine they are both addictive and can hurt you. I just stick to Panadol.
The last thing u want to mess with are pills if youve a suspected Peptic Ulcer or Duodenul xxxxx

Karenja... Can't help much with treatment but can assure you I have same. New onset headache was really my first obvious meno symptom. Had mri, two ct scans and saw ent specialist. All normal. They are definitely less on hrt but still get flashes of shooting pain at random locations in my skull. Pain behind my eyes was a prominent feature early on but primarily if I'm going to get a headache it is at the base of my skull.

Headache does need to be worked up to rule out other causes. But as with all the rest of this crappola I find keeping a symptoms journal and tracking with your cycles may help reassure you as to what may be hormonal and what's not.

I've just had a hot stone massage - absolute bliss.  The tension and knots in my shoulders and back were dreadful and the masseur wasn't in the least surprised I was getting headaches.  I can now feel my head clearing. Hormones are definitely not always to blame. DG x
