HRT and actual menopause
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:06:32 PM »

Probably a really daft question but anyway..... I am on HRT giving me a monthly bleed but how will I know when I am menopausal rather than peri-menopausal ie period free. Will the HRT continue to give me monthly bleeds forever? I am 41 with very erratic periods without HRT with cycles ranging 22-128 days, on HRT I am ranging 30-46 days (elleste duet 1mg). Would love to have the convenience of a three monthly bleed!

The answer is, you won't know unless you stop using HRT to see where you are.  A blood test might indicate the oestrogen level and if it matches what you are using with the HRT then your own body probably isn't producing much and you could be post meno.  I had a premature meno and I 'sort of' knew when I got to around 43-44 that I was into post meno because I had to up the dose of HRt I was using. At 41 it is probably wise to continue with a monthly bleed - going onto a long cycle at this stage might cause breakthrough bleeding.  It's important at your age to take HRT for the protection of your heart and bones.  Many women have problems with the 3 monthly bleed regime and most of us choose to stick with a sequi monthly bleed. The HRT should be controlling your cycle better - you should be getting a bleed a couple of days after you finish the combined progesterone and oestrogen phase of this HRT preparation - so there shouldn't be this variation in your cycle.  You may still be very peri meno and your own hormones are influencing quite a bit.  DG x

Hi ChocChaos :)

Sorry DG seemed to overlap with you there :)

I'm on a monthly HRT option too. Monthly with a day or two here or there.
I'm on a low 1mg option. What are you on? If your on a lower dose estrogen then you might have different results.
Also if you forget a tablet/patch here and there then this will affect you month by month also.

I know there is Tridestra here in the UK. Which is a 3 month cycle.
That might give you a more regular period.

I wanted to go on that earlier but doc was useless and thought this was for post meno ???
But I feel the monthly option was given to try and put me off as my periods were almost getting close to the year  :o

Obviously no guarantee but certainly worth a try.

Hope that helps.

I started flushes at 42yrs of age, then along came the other symptoms, like Ibs, moods, etc
I am 48yrs old now and am on hrt evorel and utrogestan. I didn't know I was in perimeno, I took the strange symptoms and moods to be side effects of medication I was on as I thought meno started in early 50's.
I was getting periods all the time, but not regular, some 3 weeks apart, some 6wks..

I went on hrt in 2013, femoston for a year, which didnt stop my flushes, in fact they ramped up a lot and got worse, but it did regulate my periods.
Maybe that was when I went post meno.
I then went onto evorel, starting at 50mcg but it only helped a tiny bit, 75mcg helped a bit more, at the end of this cycle going on 100mcg.

I don't feel like stopping my hrt to see if my periods have stopped, because I couldn't stand the flushes etc that my trusty patch has helped.
