Hi gina - sorry that nobody has answered your question yet. If you use the search button in the blue bar top left of the screen it will bring up any posts from members who may have this problem. I just tried it and it has been mentioned quite a few times.

Gina I have a hiatus hernia - diagnosed 25 years ago. I don't know how much you know but assume your GP has advised you in respect of the do's and don'ts? Here is a useful link to information about the condition:

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/hiatus-hernia-leaflet

Every now and again I get episodes of acid reflux which if I'm not careful to start treating straight away can cause oesophagitis. (Inflammation of the gullet). I usually get a warning sign in the form of burping on an empty stomach when I first wake. I have Omeprazole on repeat prescription and taking one or two of these in a morning is usually enough to stop it in its tracks. Just lately I've been having a really bad attack of symptoms which I think was caused by the progesterone in my new HRT prescription - (progesterone, along with certain food and drink can relax the oesophogeal sphincter in susceptible people, causing reflux of acid into the gullet) - and I've had to step up the treatment routine to include Gaviscon, a doubling up of the PPI's and a very bland diet. It's also recommended to not eat within three hours of going to bed and to avoid vigorous exercise particularly anything that involves bending and twisting.

I hope this helps  :great:

Yes to the wind at both ends - but I have IBS which is probably a factor. Unfortunately flatulence is also one of the side effects of taking Omeprazole for me - it's a real balancing act to ensure the meds do their job without creating new issues! I get the pain in my chest too, sometimes it radiates around the back and sides - not nice! I hope you feel better soon :)

i also have ibs..had it for years..never sure which is the culprit as both play up the same in some instances...mt breast bone hurts sometimes especially to left side..and in behind at the front and left shoulder...i think when one part of digestive system is out of kiter ..the rest follows suit

It's a common condition in ladies of a 'certain' age …….. probably caused by a drop of oestrogen = laxity ……..

Eating earlier in the evening.  Keeping off spicy foods.  Sleeping propped up …….. can all ease that feeling of reflux and indigestion.

I've had hiatus hernia for about 10 years now and also take omeprazole (repeat prescription so always have some in when I get an episode)  I don't get the really severe chest pain that I used to when first diagnosed but do get the awful taste in my mouth. Gp advised taking one tablet in the morning and one in the evening when it's very bad and supplementing with Gaviscon if needed.  Mine flares up if I'm stressed but also if I do not eat regularly ( or too much spicey or fatty food) . I find eating something (cracker or biscuit)  helps to calm it.  Also make sure you sit properly and don't slouch AND make sure your bra is the correct size.  Sounds odd - but I usually wear underwired and quite structured/ close fitting  bras but now have a special soft one for days when the hernia is playing up  -surprising what a difference it makes .
Noticed gina123 that you mentioned sinus problems ME TOO!! big time. Wonder if it is all connected - do you suffer with post nasal drip. Maybe that effects the gut.
