Smoking and crying
« on: March 02, 2015, 07:49:48 AM »

Hello Ladies

I gave up smoking 6 weeks ago, (gave up previously got 10 years but started again 4 years ago). I use HRT and Citalopram and regardless of how anxious and low I can get I never cry. however since giving up smoking I have become an emotional wreck! I cry at the drop of a hat! Sometimes I feel my depression is back again, I really hope not, I'm so up and down emotionally, could it be dut to not smoking?

Thanks

Hello Shellb.

Congratulations for giving up smoking and I'm sure the sudden withdrawal of nicotine will be impacting on your emotional state.

I'm not a smoker and use an AD and HRT and I've noticed a change in my ability to cry.  For a long time I couldn't cry even though I wanted to but recently I've been able to again, the other evening I didn't think I would stop!

The changes you've noticed are probably a mixture of giving up smoking and experiencing another phase of the menopause. I hope things settle for you soon.

Wishing yo well.

Hi Shellb

I can't comment on the lack of smoking causing crying but also to say :congrats: for giving up!! This can only be of benefit to your health into the future.

As for crying generally - I cried a lot during peri-menopause when my hormones were fluctuating - although I didn't know it at the time and just put it down to being emotional and life events!

Hope you feel better soon  :)

Smoking is a habit gleaned over years so do NOT expect to give up suddenly! there will be side-effects.  There are lots of ideas on the Market as well as free on the NHS to ease people out of the habit.  Changing the time of day when one lights up can help, i.e. after a meal  ;) and why anyone stops all at once I can never understand  ::) - little steps.

As for crying - I haven't had a Good Cry for years ………. unless it's a weepy programme and DH sits beside me  :(  :-X when I feel I can't let go ……..

Don't try to stop how you feel, go with the flow  ;)

Thankyou so much for your kind replies, they mean a lot and are very encouraging.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day, although today did get better.
Thanks

I reckon that stopping smoking, like dieting, should be done gradually! [not that I've done either].  With encouragement.  Don't beat yourself up if you lapse - 2-morrow is another day!
