« on: February 20, 2015, 03:55:32 PM »

Hubby is researching his family tree and is coming up against a brick wall with his dad's service records. We even have his....number ??? And still no joy.

Anyone done it successfully?

He is already paying for the Ancestory one.....and it's not cheap.

My brother has spent a fortune doing our family tree. Would it be possible to write directly to his dad's old regiment to get the information? Of course they may not have the information or may charge. Not sure what my brother did? I'd ask him, but would get a story that would last until the cows come home, instead of a simple answer.  ::)

Each Regiment has a records office and often a Museum ……….. where was he based ….. The Imperial War Museum is also a place to look and there are various magazines on the shelves that give advice.  War Memorials are also a good place as are Church Records.  Royal British Legion?

He was a submariner. Based at Dunoon for a good part of the war. We know the name of the submarine but not the years he served on it.
It's really interesting.....when my MIL came to visit us many many years ago we took her to Dunoon to revisit where she lived during part of the war. It was very emotional as she never thought she would ever go back.

That's why her three boys have Scottish names.......who would have thought my hubby would have ended up here after being born near London. Coincidence or what.

HB
Can you tell me where you got large family tree chart? I've been doing mine for a long time now but need to start putting details into a chart, I've only seen smaller ones and don't hold enough

 ;D
Me or HB?
Just when you say that, my village is small and most of my family lives here we have done for generations so the local cemetery is half full of my family and I think we probaly own the other half with empty plots so I could get my chart done and laminated and stick it up on the wall up there  ;D
