Aches and pains.
« on: February 07, 2015, 06:46:39 PM »

Does anyone else in peri find they seem to ache more?

A few times over the last year or so,  it's felt like I've hurt all over - like I've been trampled on.
Last night, I went to bed with a bit of a sore lower back and an ache between my shoulders. Can't think of anything unusual I'd done to cause it, and I had a dead sea salt bath to try to help.
Woke up this morning and it was worse, and I've shuffled around all day like I'm 90.
Not sure if it's connected, but I also woke up early with palpitations - the first time really for about a week.

Do hormones affect our muscles and bones?

Yep.  A drop of oestrogen can cause laxity!  I ache in various parts intermittently.

Thanks for the reassurance, CLKD.

Previously, when it's happened, I've wondered about it being connected to Crohn's (joint problems are very common, because it's a systemic inflammatory disease) or whether I might have fibromyalgia - but that was before I knew anything about the symptoms of peri.
It's not very nice - I really do feel like I've been sat on tonight!

Do you think palpitations are caused by falling oestrogen too? Or is it a coincidence that they have made a reappearance with the aches and pains?

I hate feeling so creaky - if I'm like this at 45, what will I be like in another twenty years?  :o
A year or so ago, I was running 3 or 4 times a week, between 5 and 10k each run. I got the odd knee and hip niggle, and I have some problems with my right shoulder from  35 years of flute playing - but the back ache is something else. :'(

Yes - It's no coincidence - they are both connected to dropping oestrogen levels honorsmum...

I have the pain between the shoulder blades. Some days I feel like I've been hit with a sledge hammer.

Yoga and shoulder/neck exercises help. I've just started HRT to see if it helps.

I think it's connected too. My palps have reappeared along with few flushes, hence the reason I'm starting higher dose

Thanks, Galadriel.
So, is that a general drop in oestrogen in peri, or fluctuations over the course of a normal menstrual cycle?
The sledge hammer comment is right! My hip hurts too, and my ribs at the sides...I just hurt all over today.  >:(

I've had breast bone pain on one side, but I think it was connected to problems with muscles in my neck. Will see whether it coincides with a particular part of my cycle.

I'm on day 15 today...which could be anywhere between 21 and 28 days, so I have no idea what is happening!

Honorsmum - my GP checked my Vit D level because I complained of joint/muscle pains - it came back very low.  She prescribed a high dose of Vit D which I started in November and this week my blood test came back normal.  Might be coincidence but I don't ache half as much as I did and am having less headaches too.  Have you had yours checked?  Still have tennis elbow, not as bad, think that's from using a mouse in the office at work and perhaps from texting!!

Thanks, Sparkle.
I haven't had it tested, but having read that most people are deficient and how important it it, I've started taking a high strength vitamin D3 supplement in the last couple of weeks. Maybe it will take a while to help?

Yes, definitely! I suffered extreme aches and pains initially (mainly shoulder blades, back and arm) to the extent I was on a high dose of medication and had to give up running, something I'd enjoyed for over 15 years.  It impacted on my central nervous system too, resulting in horrible tingling and numbness. It took 2 years before a connection was made with low estrogen. Pain wise, things gradually improved, but I ended up replacing one set of symptoms with another. I think that's when the anxiety first kicked in - that 'and what weird and scary new symptom will raise its ugly head today?' feeling that still plagues me. I've become such a pessimist!  :-\. Xx

Briony, I can completely relate.
I was loving running, but first I got a weird sinus problem that was all related to a shoulder and neck problem, and then I started to get a problem with my big toe joints and it became too painful. I'm wondering now if it was hormone related, looking back.
This summer, I had terrible hay fever, which coincided with my cycles going haywire and bad ovulation symptoms and pmt...which then moved on to lower back aches...palpitations...anxiety...and now more aches.

I've had a week of feeling much better and stupidly thinking everything was going to go back to normal - so feeling 90 with a racing heart when I woke up this morning was a bit of a blow!

Yes! I literally just said pretty much the exact same thing to OH and then read your post haha. Even with all the other painful/ weird symptoms aside, I constantly feel achy and like im pulling every muscle in my upper body one by one week after week. I used to be bouncy and energetic and doing cartwheels with the kids. Now i groan and ache and get the kids to help pull me up from my seat haha. Ridiculous!
