Feeling ill at ease
« on: February 04, 2015, 07:47:36 PM »

I have mentioned this in another thread the other day, just wanted to see how many others suffer this, and is it really a peri symptom. This past couple of weeks have been particularly bad for me, I am constantly feeling on edge, sensitive to light and noise, tight band around head, and feel like I could explode at any moment, it's really scary.  Sparkle if you're reading this, I know we both suffer from very similar symptoms.

I think I am going to try CBT, but where I live  in Scotland it's done over the telephone through NHS Living life, don't know if other areas in the UK have the telephone service or if it's face to face consultations, I have been told by GP that both work just as well.  Have any of you tried CBT and found it helped?

One other thing that I do find can help a little is Rescue Remedy, the spray one.

Hi cheekygal I also have this feeling of doom and feel ill at ease most days, I alhave a foggy head and am sensitive to light ( sometimes I feel I need more light if the lighting is a bit dull) and feel really odd in supermarkets. I have just started on HRT and my anxiety has eased a bit but still have the uneasy feeling all day, however once home from work and relaxed it all dissapears and I feel my old self again ( well almost)

Glad you are getting some relief with the HRT.  When I was agoraphobic years ago, I wasn't so bad at home, but not been out all day and still have the feeling, it's worse when I think about things I have to go and places I need to go to, I really thought I had left all that feelings behind 12 years ago!

Sparkle hope all goes well with your mammogram, didn't realise you had been for one.  I expected to be called for routine one when I was 50, still waiting though.  Got the bowel thingumee in, I keep meaning to do it, but have't as yet.  I just can't seem to motivate myself to do anything these past 3 weeks, ever since that last period, feels like PMT that's never going, or a really bad hangover but without the alcohol.  I have been trying to cut back on sugar as I was eating a horrendous amount of rubbish, maybe some of my current issues is down to that, as sugar is a drug so I guess we are bound to have some amount of withdrawal, not cut it out completely just drastically reduced it. Thinking back to last week, I had a bit of a choc binge on Thurs/Fri and was less anxious, think I have just answered my own question  ;D

AJ glad to hear that your HRT has helped overcome your agoraphobia.

Hi Cheekygal

Yes I too get the tight band round head, sensitivity to noise and also to light. Wired up to a point where I am so uptight I can only just function and feel so explosive I have to leave the room when members of my family, say something, do something or sometimes just the fact that they enter the room is enough for me to leave. It just feels like I am dragging a huge anger around with me. Its not there all the time, it starts before a period and last 10 days to 2 weeks - ish. You are not alone
I think CBT is the way forward and also to try and build some relaxation into your day or night. 20 mins each day works xx

Oh dear Sparkle, what a lot you have been through.  Here we get called for routine mammogram at 50 and also get sent the bowel screening test.  I think the bowel one is maybe 55 or 60 in England.  Hopefully it will nothing, but I understand your worry.

Everyones mum, it's horrible when there is nothing specific to cause the way we feel, another way I can describe it, is like waiting for say results of a test, then you feel a huge relief when it's good news, but in our cause that apprehension feeling seems to last forever and the relief never comes.  I just feel like I am existing not living.  Called the CBT to register, was answerphone but lady called me back just now and I just burst into tears, all she asked was my address!  They post out questionnaire and decide from there if an assessment is needed to determine whether life coaching, CBT or a combination of both is needed, everything is done over the phone.  Will let you know how that goes.

Awww thanks Sparkle, however I do feel all I do is moan on here as oppose to giving advice, just wish my posts were more positive, therefore giving others hope.  Maybe that will come soon.   :)

Yeah I managed to give her my address and DOB, so just waiting for the questionnaire now.  Think it's called a PHQ-9, and I think it tests the level of depression, although mine is more anxiety, it's available for anyone to do online.

I too registered for CBT as I have heard it has 90% success rate. They did an assessment over the phone and I got a letter a week later confirming that I qualify for talk therapy. When I had the phone call I was feeling extremely bad and did also have a bit of a cry, but the guy on the other end was really understanding. I said to him that I would never have thought I would be sitting here now asking to see a therapist. I have always been a very grounded, positive, confident person, and now feel I am the complete opposite of this !!
There is a 4 to 6 week waiting list and I have now been waiting 4 weeks so should not be too long now. It will be interesting to compare notes  :)

Yes ERD, please do post and keep us updated as to how you go?  What part of the country are you in and is it NHS living life you registered through? I'm in Scotland and talk therapy wasn't mentioned on the leaflet I got to register.  I heard that psychiatric services are snowed under as, allegedly Job Centre staff have been advising people with mental health issues to go to their GP and ask for psychiatric referral and that is why is it so hard to get face to face therapy.  However the telephone service apparently has just as good a success rate.

I'm in Essex ( 40 miles southeast of London ) and the Talk Therapy is through the NHS. The Dr. gave me the number. I was not sure what sort of therapy I needed, but he nice chap on the phone thought I would benefit from Talk. I will let you know when I get my first session.
