Postmenopausal is when you've gone a year without periods, I think.
I think some doctors use "menopausal" to describe everything up to that point, including perimenopause.

honoursmum is right 1 year without a period classifies you as menopausal, but apparently if you're under 50 it's two years.

You are post-menopausal as soon as you've had your last period ie the last period sets the date of your menopause. However you only know this in retrospect - because you have to have gone a year without periods to be able to say, that for most women, this was the last one.

By the way you have to go only one year without periods before you are classed as having been post-menopausal for one year. The one year/two year thing relates to contraception. Under 50 you have to use contraception for 2 years following last period. I imagine this discrepancy errs on the side of caution for both areas - ie to avoid unwanted pregnancies in under 50's, and to make sure that any abnormal bleeding ( following one year without periods) is always investigated in any woman.

Clear as mud?!

daisie - for your doctor to say you are menopausal is not especially helpful in your position. As honorsmum says this is the term used by many docs for the time period leading up to menopause! 59 is very late to still be having natural periods. How often are you having them - eg over the past couple of years? Even though you are not offocially post-menopause yet ( because of your bleeding), because of your age I would want the doctor to investigate my womb lining just to check that there is nothing amiss.

I presume you are not on HRT/the pill/Mirena coil?

I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and kept ovaries - how does one know for sure you're menopausal in this case?  My GP is going by symptoms and doesn't see any merit in testing my hormones - I personally have little doubt I am "in it" but there's a little voice in the back of my mind  - what if I'm not really "in it" and taking HRT..... :-\

CJ-sleepless - my Gynaecologist won't do blood tests because our hormones are up and down throughout the 24/7.  He only goes on the Lady's symptoms which is better - hormonal blood tests are reliably un-reliable and you won't be doing any harm by taking HRT if it is found to be helpful.

GO by your symptoms !

AAAHHH - Beconase nasal spray interuppted periods years ago, [1970s], the only time I had 'break through' bleeding.  Have a word with a Pharamacist for advice? they have private rooms these days  ;)

yes honorsmum ..how do we know .iv tried many times to come off the amitriptyline but with no joy at all they say theyr not addictive that I should be on them for 6 months ..that was 6 years ago now .have you been on the hrt since the hysterectomy.im thinking iv been going through a bad menopause for 14 years now .could be the amitriptyline that's the problem  I could be over menopause and just suffering the affects of the meds which have not been suiting me x

Amitriptylene needs guided weaning off - under the care of the GP or psychiatrist …….. as a medication it did NOTHING for my trigenimal neuralgia  :-\ …. it's an anti-convulsant if I remember correctly ……….
