Is weight gain inevitable with HRT?
« on: January 27, 2015, 12:09:35 PM »

Due to my low moods and worse PMS I haven't had much appetite these last couple of months and have lost nearly a stone. I really like being this slim and physically I feel much better for it.

Hopefully I should start on HRT within the month and was wondering if it will make me put on weight? Do you gain weight because of a chemical cause from the HRT? Or just because you feel so much better that you feel like eating more again?

I'd really like to keep this stone off it at all possible.

I think it depends on the persom and we are all different. I am on HRT for 9 months already and haven't noticed any weight gain. You should't worry.

I'm one who would love a bit of weight gain. Everyone said it will hit you in meno, 9 months on HRT and still nothing x

I've gained 5kgs since menopause but don't know if is HRT or age. I eat less and exercise more too!

My weight gain was prior to going on HRT.

No further gain since starting last year (12 months+).

I think everyone has an individual reaction! I know of several friends who maintained a happy weight for decades, but gained significantly during the first year of HRT! That made me very wary of taking it when the symptoms started 10 years ago, but I couldn't take it because of blood pressure probs. However, my weight which I've also maintained since my 20's started to fluctuate within the first year of meno, and now 10 years later at 63 I'm at least 1stone heavier than I want to be anyway!!!  :o

I agree with the others - most weight gain is due to menopause and changing (reduced) metabolic requirements. Oestrogen alters the distribution of fat so your breasts will get denser, but the oestrogen dose is probably insufficient for most women to regain their youthful "pear shape".

Some of the synthetic progestogens cause bloating in some women.

I have put on a few pounds recently but I have also managed to lose weight successful whilst on HRT ( for almost 8 years) and have been at least half a stone lighter (I'm 9 st 4 at the mo') while on HRT which is what I was for much of my life.

Hereis the info on this site:

i recently had a one year break from HRT and I found that I gained some fat around my mid drift. I'm back on HRT and this fat has now gone down and my muscle tone is better - probably because I have more energy so I'm doing more exercise.  DG x
