Isoflavone supplement
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:00:08 PM »

Hi!
I have been researching a lot just lately about different treatments etc for perimenopause, as I have a doctors appointment on Monday and I'm not sure which way I want to go now, I have tried HRT and had awful side effects, doctor put me on mini pill to control bleeding and was on for 11 weeks till I stopped taking them, not sure the best route now, I saw this on this website below and it suggests that Isoflavone is good for hot flushes, has anyone tried this, another one I found was for Qlaria but when I look at reviews on the internet its very mixed so not sure what to think. I have been off all pills now since end of November, just wondered if anyone had tried Isoflavone?

Hi robotwars
I havn't heard of this but didn't want to ignore your post. I use Menosan (A. Vogel) and it made quite a difference plus Menopace which my GP (lady in her late 50s) suggested, as it had Isoyflanes or Isoy something (can't remember now, it was 2 weeks ago). It's such a lottery isn't trying to find a solution of sorts. I was on HRT from age 51-55 and came off it in Oct. My life has turned upside down emotionally and I'm sitting here crying but don't know why. I know the easiest thing would be to go back on HRT but I don't want to undo the last 12 weeks of trying to be HRT free.

Be interested if anyone else has tried this supplement? I have ordered Red Clover (on-line)and will let you know if that works when it eventually arrives.

I'm afraid I've tried everything with no positive effect.  I've spent a fortune over the years and HRT has been the only answer for me.  I do take Menopace but not because it has isoflavines in it but because it is a good all round vitamin supplement and has a good amount of Vitamin d which is very important particularly in winter.
If you really want to try anything then I believe Red Clover is worth a try (I have tried it) but increasing your intake of isoflavines/ phytoestrogens e.g. soya, legumes etc. is supposed to be the key. I have tried this and as a vegetarian this was easy for me but this had no real benefit.  I went back on HRT 8 weeks ago after a one year break from HRT and oh boy do I feel better.
Save your money and go on a nice holiday instead - it would probably do more good.

Poppi - I wouldn't put yourself through too much for too long.  It's good to take a break from HRT to see how you cope but life is short and nobody can tell you how long the symptoms will last. If you are mainly suffering with low mood then I believe St. John's Wort can be good for this. If all your meno symptoms are bad then HRT is the answer.

Hi robotwars

Sorry to hear about your problems - I remember you were put on the mini-pill but that is not designed to help with general menoipausal symptoms - just heavy bleeding. I think we had a discussion a while back - were you going to consider a Mirena coil? Did the mini pill not control the bleeding? I can't remember what your other symptoms were - sorry.

Re isoflavones - Red Clover contains these. I understand these are one of the most promising alternative treatments - because they have oestrogenic activity. I keep meaning to look up all the research but then forget. There is some information on this site about Red Clover and the isoflavones they contain and mode of action:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/phytoestrogens.php

Poppi - I agree with Dancinggirl - why are you trying to be HRT free at only 55? I only started HRT just before I was 54 and have been on it ever since (now 61). Really no need to suffer unless there is a good medical reason why you need to stop. Look at the information on this page: http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/balance.php
Hover the mouse over the left hand box ( you are between 50 and 60) and you will see the benefits of HRT exceed the risks.

Thanks so much for your replies, I'm not sure what to do to be honest. My doctors appointment is Monday and I have waited 4 weeks to get an appointment!
I have tried Prempak C but had terrible side effects, ended up with servere stomach cramps, sickness etc so doctor told me to stop, then went on the mini pill to help control bleeding, this didn't work as I ended up bleeding all the time, it started of I was on for two weeks, then off for two weeks, then I was on constantly for 11 weeks, so I went to GP, who suggested the combined pill, took this for three weeks, bleeding didn't stop, so decided to just stop all pills!
At the moment my emotions are up and down, I have good days and bad days, I'm not sleeping, seem to wake up at about 2am every night.....my legs ache and so does my lower back on and off, I have had a few hot flushes mainly at night time, I'm not sure what's going on with my periods now as I stopped all pills at the end of Nov, came on just before Christmas for 7 days and haven't been on since, this week I have had a heavy feeling in the bottom of my stomach all week as if I am going to come on but haven't!!!! I'm 49 years old, I just don't know what to try now, I just don't want to be ill again with side effects of medication as I have so much going on in my life at the moment and really don't want to be ill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have read everything on this website and spent every night searching on the internet, I'm now so confused...... when I read about the Isoflavone I was curious as to whether it worked or not....thanks for your replies.. :)
