Advice on utrogestan conti regime?
« on: January 13, 2015, 05:16:52 PM »

Hi everyone- I'd be grateful for your advice- in short ... I'm coming to end of second month of utrogestan with estradot 50. I take the utro vaginally days 1-25 then supposed to take 3 days off to allow a bleed if there is going to be one.....
I'm on day 21 and have started a bleed but still have 4 utro tabs to use before the 3 day gap. I'm a little queasy to insert them during a bleed (I'm pathetic I know!) so do you think its ok to take the last 4 orally then return to vaginally when the bleed stops so I keep to the conti regime days?
On another note.....I'm sooo pleased I stuck with utro as I actually now feel pretty good on it (having felt completely shocking in month 1!)- weird I know but I almost feel better with the progesterone all the time rather than when I did 2weeks only. Guess my body has just got used to it.

If I were you I'd just have your 3 day break now! It's not precise and your own hormones are obviously still kicking in. I don't suppose there would be a problem taking orally either except you would absorb less.

I'm like you - I feel much better on continuous progesterone - I also had the settling in period but after that it was great and definitely better than the roller coaster of on-off with progesterone

Hi Kittyjay

What dose of Utrogestan are you taking? I presume it's the 100 mg as this is the only one available now and also is the licensed dose for continuous combined HRT (apart from the 3 day break that is)?

Ideally while you are still having periods the aim is to synchronise HRT with your natural cycle, but since many women have irregular cycles as they progress towards menopause this becomes somewhat academic! However it is important to continue to take the right dose of progesterone to oppose the amount of oestrogen - and therefore keep the lining thin.

Personally I would take the rest of the dose orally - but also depends on where you are in menopause ie how were your periods before starting HRT?

The reason some women feel better on continuous progesterone, is because those who can tolerate it no longer have the rise and fall in this hormone - which is responsible for many symptoms of pms - as you say your body has adjusted to it. The last pms phase of HRT occurs for several days after stopping the progesterone and usually before the bleed as in the natural cycle - which leads women to believe the oestrogen is causing their symptoms - when in fact it is the last bit of the progesterone phase - the progesterone withdrawal - and the associated physiological changes.

It's good to hear you feel good on it! I am thinking that 100 mg could be a better option for me - but I don't want to use it vaginally all the time ( ;) ), and like to keep my cycle longer.....

Thanks Ladies- I take 100mg of utrogestan Hurdity and the vaginal route definitely has drawbacks  ;) but I find I now have minimal side effects using this route so prepared to keep up with it for now. I basically had no period for 5 months and after blood tests my doc said I was "post meno". I realise now-through being on here-that he prob meant peri but to be honest I was so shocked (I was only 41) I got all confused! Anyway 2 years later I've been on femseven sequi and evorel sequi but have fibroids and had intermittent bleeding so after an ultrasound to check all ok, my gp agreed to my current regime of continuous progesterone with estradot patches.
He actually wanted me to have mirena but I wanted to try this first and now v pleased I did. Is this regime unusual for my age though? X
