And if families can't afford the extortionate prices during holidays and decide to take children out of school for a week then they get fined. B***dy stupid.
We took our two out a few times, not to avoid the prices as Scottish holidays are different but because my hubby worked abroad a lot of the time and he couldn't always get time off during school holidays.
Ok rant over.

Have you thought about a caravan on a small site Taz. We did that just before Easter and it was really lovely. Did not have to make do and mend with anything.

It makes me angry too when prices alter.  It's the same on camp sites but paying more doesn't give me any more than if I went at a different time of year  - can't even guarantee the weather

Even the caravan prices are high in the holidays in my favourite place. I've just had a look and it's £800 for a van that sleeps four (bit small) or £1,065 for one that sleeps six!! Much cheaper to go abroad!  A special offer's just come up - a van that sleeps for "only" £959.00

Heavens Taz that's a bit steep for a van. Maybe need to find another place to go. Have you looked at the Owners Direct site. They can be a weeny bit cheaper.

We had a brand new van....first people in it ...in the Trossachs for....£250. Guess where I'm heading back to later this year.

Was that in the summer holidays honeyb? I don't want to go anywhere else though but will check out the Owners Direct site although I would prefer an apartment to a caravan. I'm thinking of going in October instead. Prices drop by around £300 which is more affordable.

The best way of getting affordable holidays (overseas at least) is to book flights as soon as these are released. Flights are priced in bands so the cheapest seats on the aircraft are always the first 20 or so, then they go up for the next 20, then up again.  We always secure our flights as soon as the schedules are released, that's anywhere from 11 months before for a scheduled airline like BA, to around 6 months for Easyjet.   

The same is also happening with hotel rooms, we have an allocation of rooms we bought back in September - these are nearly 50% higher in price now...

It's often difficult to know what our plans are a year ahead, but once you get into the swing of planning in advance, it does save you a fortune as well as give you the widest choice of accommodation.

Thanks GG - I never go abroad though. When booking holidays in this country it doesn't make any difference how far ahead you book as the prices are already fixed based on the next year's school holiday dates.

I've checked out the Owners Direct site and got all excited when it said £273!! Then I realised it was per night...

It was just before Easter Taz but for Sept and October it goes up about £150 which is still reasonable for what we got.
Maybe you should head north a bit as its much cheaper I think.

It's just the way prices jump during school holidays that gets me. Not sure that going somewhere else would be the same. Because I go on my own I do tend to relax better when I'm in my well known place. Did stay in Whitby a couple of times but that was expensive too. I'll just have to change my job!

In recent years our holidays have been late August/early September to get cheaper rates. However, we're going earlier this year as it was cheaper than our usual time.  Holidays during the summer used to be a nightmare when our kids were little. Hubby was in police so juggling that in with school holidays was tricky. We did a lot of self catering in those days at fairly short notice. Now you have to book quite far in advance.

DH don't argue about much but these hikes in price annoy me! but he says that it's supply and demand and in fact, booking out of season is the discounted rate 

One way of booking is to go directly to the owner of the property  not through an Agency!

Guernsey littleminnie. Went 27 years ago, but we're going a bit more upmarket this time. Last time kids were young & we went to opposite side of island which had a great beach for them to play on.
