imformation please ref Norethisterone
« on: December 26, 2014, 01:45:16 PM »

Hi ladies...   im after a little bit of info if anyone could help... i have been on vagifem for quite a long period. my question is ............ is anyone else on anything  else with vagifem, or like me only given vagifem...  as i accessed my medical records today to find out, in some magical land, i have been taking norethisterone for two weeks of every month..  iv never actually had any...  is anyone else...  another thing i have noticed that suddenly for no apparent reason after having a bad phase on vagifem and using it almost every other day, i now dont notice any pain and forget to take it and manage 5 days in between.. i almost feel normal.. this has coincided with changing to washing my underwear in handsoap, i.e. dettol handsoap, and using multi gym actigel...  but basically my request is.... is anyone else on another hrt with vagifem or norethisterone or like me only on vagifem .. thank you

Hi hellen. I started off just on vagifem but as I went further into menopause I then needed full HRT to give the same relief. I stopped the vagifem when I started HRT and for a few years all was ok but I then suffered vaginal atrophy symptoms again so vagifem was added back into the mix. Things are different now that vagifem is a lesser dose and many women are finding that vagifem alone is not enough to control symptoms. Some women do double up the vagifem dose to keep symptoms at bay but not all doctors are happy with this - cost coming into it of course.

I'm not sure why norethisterone would have been mentioned unless your doctor was misinformed and thought you needed a progesterone to keep the womb lining thin. The oestrogen dose in vagifem is not thought to be high enough to need a progesterone.

Hope this helps.

Hi hellen
I suspect it is an error in your medical records.  It's probably an automatic set up in the software that if you are on any oestrogen (of any kind) then it is presumed you should be taking a progesterone like Norethisterone.  Vagifem is an oestrogen treatment that should only absorb locally so will not build up the womb lining, therefore an apposing progesterone is not needed.
It is important to keep using the Vagifem regularly to maintain the benefits. You may be experiencing a good phase of comfort because the vaginal area has recovered well on the increased use of Vagifem but discomfort could return with irregular use of the Vagifem - I'd keep up the twice a week dose.  I've found Multi Gyn Actigel essential for maintaining the flora balance which really helps to keep me comfortable generally. It's a good idea to use non bio washing powder when washing ones smalls and also do them on a hot wash (60 degrees). I think we are all more prone to BV and thrush at our age so the Actigel helps to keep these things as bay.
I was only using local Oestrogen over the last year but I've recently gone back on systemic HRT as well and I have to say my vaginal area is greatly improved using both full HRt and the local oestrogen.
I'd contact the GPs and ask why the Norethisterone is on your records when it doesn't need to be.
