Tinnitus and menopause
« on: December 09, 2014, 09:03:14 PM »

Hello All. Last year I was diagnosed with Tinnitus. Have suffered with Menieres Disease for many years. Just wondered if anyone else has Tinnitus that is related to the menopause. I have read that it can be related. Am going for a brain scan, had one many years ago. Hopefully this is just routine. Don't need to suffer any more menopausal symptoms. Replies gratefully received.

I'm 63 and I have Tinnitus all of the time, it sounds like I'm in an aviary with hundreds of birds twittering! It started when I was about 53/54, just when the meno started, I don't think I need a doctor to tell me it is related! Anyway, just now because I'm thinking about it, I can hear it loudly but most of the time I tend to tune it out.  I have had tests and am told that I also have some hearing loss....the joys of getting older!! 😕 Unfortunately, I don't believe there is any real cure for it!!

Iv had tinniutus for many years now...   suffering some hearing loss as it has progressed.. my brain sometimes tries to understand what its heard, with some funny results at times...  i had horrendous headaches when it first came on, but apart from a hearing test, many years ago i never received any treatment. you can be given a hearing aid that you tune into the same sound as you hear.. the idea being that you listen to that than the noise in your head and gradually turn it down.. dont know if anyone has ever had success with them.  theres a few things in food and drink that makes it louder im told, ..  and i believe what the dentist inject into your gums Lidocaine,  is supposed to quieten it.

I started having tinnitus last year. I am four years into perimenopause and like Maryjane mine gets worse when I'm tired and/or stressed. Last year saw a huge ramp-up in all my symptoms so I'm convinced it is hormonal.
Fortunately I find I can tune out if I'm busy doing something fun and really absorbing.

Mine started after recurrent ear infections. Worse some days than others especially when I'm tired or stressed.
I think my brain is quite good at tuning it out. Other times I just try and ignore it.

Horrible thing though.

I'm not totally convinced it's all down to meno.minthink it can be an age related complaint.

I also have tinnitus and have had it on and off for years, although like the other ladies it has got worse since my meno symptons have kicked in. I do only notice when I am in a quite room or when I get stressed, so probably also tuning it out.

I have a bit of hearing loss in my left ear. I only noticed that when I was lying in bed listening to a relaxation app. It got quieter and then louder depending on which side I was lying on. Took me ages to make the connection....I thought it was a fault on my tablet  ;D

Thick or what  ::)

Well, the start of my tinnitus coincided with the start of meno...so I'm assuming there's a connection, anyway, I've found a way of coping. If the tinnitus is keeping you awake, try an app on your phone/iPad which provides 'white noise' I have a rain/water app, and my favourite is waves lapping the shore, it's really soothing and drowns out (forgive the pun) the sound of a million birds twittering in my head!
