How are people coping with this really cold weather?
« on: December 07, 2014, 11:44:37 PM »

Hi

How is everyone coping with this really cold weather.
I am particularly interested in the women who have hot flushes.

For me, when it's freezing cold, I can just feel normal, even though I have no heating on and can see my breath in the air inside my own living room.
Bed can feel normal too, although prior to perimenopause I would need a jumper in bed, nowadays I just have my jamas on.

Other times, I can feel both hot and cold.
For instance, I can be cold, put on a jumper, and have a flush, take jumper off, be cold again. In bed, I can be cold, put my jumper on top of my jamas, get overbearingly hot, take it off again, and be cold.

So, some days over this last cold spell, I either felt normal, even though people round me are walking round in coats and jumpers, or I can feel both hot and cold at the same time.

We haven't had any really cold weather here yet Dandelion - just a couple of heavy frosts but nothing like normal December weather. The jumper on/jumper off you describe is typical of hot flushes though. Such a nuisance - especially when shopping and wearing a coat.

Hi Taz

You are lucky, we have had a few really cold days here.
I mostly don't wear a coat though, even in this freezing weather, because when I go indoors, I just get too hot and sweaty.
I usually wear a thin top with a jumper on top or a cardigan, then I carry an extra big woolie or a hoodie in a carrier bag, I wear hat and gloves, but I put these in my bag, and if it looks like rain, take a brolly, that way, when I go indoors I don't get so hot and sweaty and can even strip down to the lowest layer, the thin top.

It was quite chilly here yesterday & I jet washed the deck. Didn't want to come in at all but had so much to do indoors I had to. Didn't feel one bit cold until I came inside & realised how wet I was & the shower I took stung. Small advantages ;  having to keep my husband off the heating button though but I say it's to save money so he can't argue xx

Yeah, my flushes made a significant difference to my energy bills last year.
I am on stronger hrt now, but still flushing but not as much as last year, Ithink.

I didn't mean that it was summer-like here in the south but more that it was not really cold weather i.e. below freezing most of the day. Layers are the way!

Yep.  Layers.  When we got back yesterday I was SO cold for several hours - huddled under a thick jumper up round my head  ::) ……. even though the fire was lit and the radiators on.

So added a layer 2-day. Also make sure that I put hat and coat on when nipping outside in order to keep core temperature even.

Fortunately I don't have flushes ………. but there are 'wicking' materials now which might help.  Go to a good 'walking' shop and have a look-see, some are long sleeved, others short t-type, some have silk aded to the material which supposedly stops smells …….. 2-day I have 3 wicking layers on as well as a the thick jumper in acrylic ……. good socks and thick slippers [probalby not a good look but I'm warmer today]  ;)

I get hot/cold around my neck. Used to wear high neck jumpers, so would end up taking off or putting on a layer. Now wrap a scarf around my neck which I can remove when I heat up.

We haven't had really cold weather either here in SW but I still wear layers even though I don't get flushes etc because I still tend to overheat.  Sounds like typical meno temperature changes. I used to hate it at work in meetings before HRT - forever going bright red and stripping off, and then having to put it all back on again when it became a cold sweat (most embarrassing with younger men around!)! What joy! Hope you feel more comfortable soon. You could always carry your stuff in a light rucksack...

I never wear jumpers or long sleeved tops any more, has to be a cardigan which is on off on off. I am always being asked if its summer at work as I always have bare arms

I do have the heating on at home though. I dont wear a thing in bed whereas I used to wear a t shirt, the duvet is on and off during the night

Flushes are a part of me now I dont think they are ever going to stop and its been 5 yrs now. They are maybe not quite as intense but are most definitely still there

Hey there

I am the same, went walking in the woods the other day with my new guy...he likes  mountain climbing, was in hat, coat, gloves etc. whilst I was in a thin top, no coat, hat, gloves for much of the time and a jacket for a very short time. I wear nothing on bed now and have a soft blanket with no quilt, lucky I sleep alone......I find it hard to cope with the extremes of temperature ...too hot and or too cold.....

Oh well two years in now and wishing it was past

Hi Ladies

Thanks for all of your good ideas.
Sorry some of you are getting flushes.
Layers are the thing for me.
I'm in South West and we have recently had a few freezing days, gonna need my electric blanket I think.
I sleep in jamas and a duvet, as I like to cuddle upto something, and the duvet is really good for this, mebbe I need a teddy bear, lol
