On my SOAPBOX : Now it's milk …...
« on: November 13, 2014, 05:10:33 PM »

that is dangerous .

In "The Lady" 7 November:

"Milk dangers
"In a study published by The BMJ, a team of Swedish scientists found that drinking more than three glasses of milk a day could be harmful.  Women who exceeded that threshold for example, were found to be almost twice as likely to die as those who consumed under 60ml per day, although 'cause and effect' has yet to be established".

:-\ ……… I think this article is dangerous.

1  which study
2  which edition of The BMJ
3  name the 'team'
4  how large is a 'glass'
5  die from what exactly
6  'cause and effect'

this is reporting at the extremes  >:( ……. no dates, no weights/measures, no idea of how many people were 'studied', Peer reviewed - I could go ON  :cuss:

I thought that "The Lady" would be above such reporting - this is a magazine I will NEVER buy again. I will be sending it to the Editor to tell her so!

There is so much rubbish out there. First you can eat it then you cant and then you can again .

The trouble is that somewhere amongst all the rubbish there will be good advice that gets lost due to everyone being sceptical about what they read.

I agree.  Don't like milk unless it's chocolate coloured  ;D

Prof Jane Plant will be rubbing her hands in glee after this article as it "seems" to back up what she has said in her books.

It is something that has been debated for years and there has been some interesting findings

http://saveourbones.com/osteoporosis-milk-myth/

Personally I am not keen on milk and it makes me feel bloated, I have never relied upon it for a source of calcium. Many many people are lactose intolerant and don't have the gene to digest cows milk.

I hated milk at school and would never touch the stuff.

So don't give up reading "The Lady" CLKD. Its a very good reputable magazine.

3 glasses of milk per day is rather a lot.  I doubt many people drink that much all the time! I find this a very strange study to do.
My sister has a great many problems that are to do with her gut and digestion system. She hates milk and when her consultant asked if she would drink some milk to help build her up she flatly refused - he did look rather exasperated at this as clearly, in his opinion, it was something that would have been good for her.
As a child I hated milk but I developed a taste for it when I was pregnant as it soothed the heartburn. I don't drink a lot of milk now but I do find it soothing.
Let's face it, if you ate nothing but fruit and vegetables all the time then that would probably make you ill as well.
Drinking a small amount of alcohol a few times a week will do you more good than not drinking alcohol at all.
Eggs were considered bad for a long while, now they are hailed as a supper food.
It's moderation in all things - "a little of what you fancy does you good".

When I started school there were small bottles of milk for us to drink.
The bottles arrived in crates, which were parked alongside the radiators.......
I have never enjoyed drinking milk.

;D  Limpy - did the milk freeze then the tops pop up as the ice expanded?

You are missing my point a bit  :-\

This reminds me of the discussion going on elsewhere on this forum about medical advice....

Some people will take medical advice from sources that, personally, I wouldn't e.g. The Lady, Daily Mail, unknown people on internet forums, that bloke down the pub last night.....

As an aside, I too hate the taste of milk having been subjected to the daily 1/3rd pint throughout junior school.  The school entrance where the crates were delivered was south-facing so by break-time it had been sitting in the sun for hours.  Ugh, makes me gag just to think of it.

CLKD - Sorry, I just saw Milk in the title, I think it tastes vile.
How is the article dangerous? Do you think drinking milk is a good idea?

I honestly fail to see the connection, no one is giving medical advice. Just observations.

The findings CLDK posted are legitimate if you read the links even if they are not agreed upon on this thread. How they are interpreted is what is being discussed I think, and as usual there are differing opinions.

I may have misled you in my post, will try to clarify...

I wasn't suggesting that anyone is trying to give medical advice on this thread but merely acknowledging what CKLD has reported that perhaps The Lady was attempting to give medical advice, apparently, without relevant references.

I was, perhaps clumsily, opining that there are similarities between taking advice from The Lady, Daily Mail, unknown people on internet forums, that bloke down the pub last night......

Yep, the jury is most definitely out on the merits of milk, especially cow's milk and varying opinions within the scientific community and elsewhere.

All I know is that I cannot tolerate any form of dairy produce. Readings I made about this way back, stated that intolerance can be caused by drinking too much milk as a child. My mum said it would have been cheaper to buy a cow.  :)  We are not supposed to drink vast quantities of milk beyond childhood.

The milk is delivered in little cartons with a straw now Limpy... but we keep them in the fridge  ;D

Is it this article CLKD? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/11193329/Three-glasses-of-milk-a-day-can-lead-to-early-death-warn-scientists.html

I immediately ignore any article that says things like 'twice as likely to die'!!  We are ALL 100% likely to die - you cannot increase or decrease your likelihood of dying.  The only question is when and how.  Saying 'twice as likely to die' without giving a comparison is completely meaningless, and either bad science or lazy journalism.  Either way, it makes me turn the page and move on.
