Omeprazole experiences please
« on: October 29, 2014, 09:04:18 AM »

My GP has prescribed Omeprazole but after taking only two, I'm not sure I want to carry on with it!

Yesterday I had terrible wind and stomach pains, and this morning I woke up with a really bad headache and feeling quite nauseous. I can't think of anything else that would be the cause.

Does anyone know if these side effects go away eventually? If so, how long does it take? I know I sound impatient but these symptoms can't be good.

I can't tolerate it either, makes me very sick and my legs went all heavy. However ranitidine, and cimetidene are absolutely fine. They say you should try for your body to get used to drugs, I did a weeks worth and that was it I looked and felt green.

after a few days it did for me too so now I only use it as and when I have bad heartburn. I prefer Gaviscon or Zantac as and when, fortunately I do not suffer very often.

sparkle, this 'I've still got the annoying cough/throat clearing/mucus ' is very familiar to me but I think mine is more to do with my allergic rhinitis and post nasal drip!

I have an almost full bottle of Gaviscon Advance in the cupboard that I used a couple of times and it was so horrible I will never use again.  Seems a waste, perhaps I could send it to you through cyberspace  ;)

I've tried two proton pump drugs and both gave me horrible side effects and the longer I took them the worse they got. It tooks weeks for my bowels to return to normal!  My GP said that if you get side effects then with these drugs that usually means you won't tolerate them.
I have hiatus hernia and heartburn and have taken famotidine for over 20 years but its not working well and am now having to take gaviscon 3-4 times a day as well because I cannot take these other drugs.

Sorry, that is so long-winded
;D Pun intended?

My GP prescribed it because I've had a cough for about four months, mainly at night so she thinks it might be caused by acid reflux. Although I rarely get heartburn, I'm willing to try anything to shift this cough because it's making my chest and throat sore, not to mention exhausting me from all the broken sleep.

Now the headache's worn off, I feel a bit better and so far today no stomach pains or wind.

I tried Gaviscon a couple of months ago - every night for a week - but it didn't help the cough.

When's the best time to take Omeprazole? I've been taking it late in the evening - should I be taking it before a meal?

I take it on an as and when required basis first thing in the morning before food. This is because (along with the previously mentioned side effects of wind and headaches) it causes insomnia when taken in the evening! I only use it when Gaviscon doesn't work, which since changing my eating habits is rarely these days.

Tabby cat it didn't work for me either & made me feel worse. I decided to stop everything my GP had prescribed at the time mainly anti nausea & other stomach tablets as I felt they where making me worse. I got back to basics & only had paracetomal for pain. I wouldn't normally give up on something but I decided to trust my instincts & it worked. Hope you feel better soon. B x

I've been taking omeprezole for the past week and think it's been giving me a dodgy stomach nothing bad though. I had heartburn everyday day 2 weeks ago then that stopped and I've been having this niggly pain just at breast bone a bit to the left, don't know if it's my stomach or what but been clearing my throat a lot too, so that's why I started taking the omeprezole and it's helping, does that sound like an ulcer or just acid build up?

Sparkle i know what you mean by slower digestion I feel that way too, I've noticed it since peri meno. I used to love eating till I was bagged up and enjoyed lying about after a big meal but now it seems smaller meals more often or else it's days before food digests properly  :'( have noticed I've been eating constantly lately so I'll cut it down a bit see what's what x
