Burning Atrophy
« on: September 15, 2014, 07:45:23 PM »

I am 57 and suffering like many others with this dreadful burning menopausal condition. I was wondering if any other suffers experience some good days and then it returns with avengeance. Yesterday Sunday, I had a really brilliant day and then today back at work it has all flared up again. Does anyone find sitting aggravates the burning? Worst times are when I have to go to the toilet. Back on Vagifem and trying yes products. Wish someone would invent a miracle cure. Excuse the pun but I hope it burns itself out. Thinking and empathising with all fellow suffers. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.  :'(
Would post on the burning club page, but new to this site and as yet haven't worked out how to do that.  ;)

No - mine began by intermittent urine infections = antibiotics; followed by similar symptoms but no infection present in urine samples.  My GP got there B4 I did, and was ready with a prescription for VA once the razor blades had taken hold 'up there'.  OUCH.

We have a couple of threads here on VA.  SuziQ writes particularly well about this.

Hi and welcome Midnight Shadow
I started 'The Burning Club' and SuziQ has done threads for good advice and support.  I know exactly what you mean about the burning being worse when you sit down for any length of time. I am about to change my Estring  and I think the oestrogen ran out about 2 weeks ago because the burning has come back a bit.  I tried Vagifem, Ovestin and Gynest but seemed all make the buying even worse. It feels as though my urethra is swollen and sore - so horrid.

Hi Midnight Shadow. Just go to the Burning Club thread - if you've found it - and under the last post you will see a "reply" button. Just click on that and you can post on there.

Have tried oral HRT but only Vagifem 25mcg & Gynest pessaries cured the recurrent cystitis and burning issues .... And both have been discontinued :( vagifem 10mcg wasn't strong enough and have been using Estring for 6 weeks but feel its effects are wearing off. ( still get really bad inflamed  urethra if I don't take it out for sex). I am not even 50 yet and can't bear the thought of many more years of suffering from this awful condition. You think you have finally found a cure and relief from the burning, soreness and then they take it off the market !
Don't know where to go next

Hello Tracy
I feel your pain. Literally a lot of the time.
My estring doesn't seem to be doing the job any more either. It was working well but with the odd dab of ovestin just outside when required - had you considered doing that? Otherwise either Taz or Hurdity (sorry, I cannot remember which lady) talks about HRT plus vagifem doing the job.

Hi TracyMac and welcome to MM
I'm sorry I have to welcome you to the 'The Burning Club' as well - this burning is truly miserable.  I'm using the Estring but I do find it runs out of oestrogen towards the end of the 3 months so I tend to burn for the last couple of weeks of the old one and the first 2-3 weeks of the new one before the oestrogen really kicks in again.
I'm seriously considering going back on full HRT as I think it is sometimes necessary to have some systemic and local oestrogen to get relief.
Like you, I am distressed to think I've got to put up with this for the rest of my life.  I dread sitting down for any length of time as this really gets the burning going.  Being really hot also seems to be a trigger so this long hot summer has been torture. I've tried changing my diet - leaving out all the usual suspects like caffein drinks, fruit juices, dairy, wheat etc. but nothing made a difference. I don't use soaps or any irritant around my lady parts - so I have tried everything.  The Estring has been my best option so far.
HAve a read through the 'Burning Club' Thread on here? Worth a read through.

On the sitting down part of it -- I use a neck cushion to sit on. TK Maxx do a good selection. The best ones are fairly solidly padded, not memory foam that squishes down.

Hi TracyMac

Yes I am one amongst several who use systemic ie full HRT as well as local oestrogen, to keep things comfortable.

re the Vagifem - can you not ask for double the amount of Vagifem? It would not be quite as much as the 25 mcg twice a week but getting near? I agree it is appalling that these products have been discontinued - probably by men making commercial decisions, or young women who have no idea what might be coming to them ( she says cynically!).

You could combine this with oral HRT eg Femoston, or transdermal ( patches or gel).

I have no problems in that department now - due to the regime I use ( which also includes Gynest cream for external areas when I remember).
