Abufene

Hi I have been told not to take HRT any more due to medical reasons and have had to put up with the dreaded flushes, these are bearable during the day but at night it is impossible and I usually am woken by them about 6 or seven times a night!! This of course adds to the bad moods during the day as I am so tired.

So in the Pharmacy this morning I found Abufene and bought some. I have looked them up and have read some info and there seem to be some side effects as there are with anything. But my question is this - has anyone on this forum experienced the side effects and what they were they? It is easy to read the medical finding but nothing compares to hearing form the horses mouth - so to speak. I would be particularly interested if any one , like me is asthmatic  or if there was any effect on the depression that some of us suffer at this time.

Many thanks in advance and I look forward to reading.

Hi dolores and welcome to MM
I googled Abufene and it seems to contain an amino acid called Alanine sometimes used by athletes.  I've never seen this on sale in any pharmacy in the UK - where do you live?
If you can't use HRT it could be worth trying some of the non HRt prescription drugs that can help with flushes etc. - you would need to to discuss this with your doctor.
Yu could try increasing your isoflavine  intake (e.g.soya foods, red clover etc.)and perhaps trying some acupuncture. Menopace is a good all round vitamin for meno ladies as well.  I get woken often by sweats and the need to pee and occasionally I take a Nytol to get a better nights sleep.
HAve you read up all the nfo under the headings to the left of this screen?
hopefully there will be other along soon with advice and help.  DG x

Hi Dancinggirl, thank you for replying.
Yes I have tried the soya route, no good for me unfortunately. I do find Kalms Night useful for some extra sleep but the hot flushes overpower the Kalms!! Oh Joy!!
I live in France so we can buy all sorts here but knowing the French - they are pretty keen on health so can't think they would sell anything that was dangerous.
Thank you for the info though, it is always so good to see what other people say.

What medical reasons have stopped you taking HRT? Its miserable being woken by flushes , I know low dose anti depressant type drugs can help and am sure there must be ladies who have opted or had no other option who will come along with their experiences,

I was not able to take HRT for various reasons and was prescribed 10mgs of citalopram to try to help with flushes and night sweats. They take a while to start working but I have found they do help. Maybe just one night sweat now and another on waking in the morning. During the day also perhaps just a couple instead of every hour, which I can cope with. If you decide to try that route hope it works for you.

hello and thank you for the most helpful replies. I am unable to continue with HRT as I developed fibroids, I did consider continuing with it but actually decided it was not worth it.

I had heard that anti-depressant can sometime work, but my GP is not keep to prescribe them and had suggested homoeopathic medicines which are less than useless!!! So I think I will continue to stick my head in the freezer every hour!!!!

dolores - if you have fibroids it is often suggested you have a Mirena fitted as this will reduce them and then you can simply use some oestrogen in patch or gel form.
Just a thought?  DG x
