basically I have not had a natural bleed since December, however when I tried elleste duet for a short time about a month ago it brought on a bleed when I came off it, so does this mean that come December I can go on Eastrogen only hrt?

You will always have to take both oestrogen and progesterone unless you have had a hysterectomy. The only thing that you can do is go on a conti HRT which will not give you a monthly bleed.
You have to go a full year without a natural bleed or be over 54 to be considered post menopausal.
Some GPs will let you take a conti HRT before this age ( mine did) but it's unusual.

I take it you haven't had a hysterectomy.

It's difficult to get your head around what's what to start with. Have a good read. The ladies on the forum are full of so much useful information.

Hi karenja

Just to add that depending on your age and your age when starting HRT you might not be able to go onto conti HRT at age 54 and also depends on your doc as honeybun says.

I started HRT at almost 54 having had my last period only 5 months previously so I had to continue on cyclical HRT (ie monthly bleed) for a few years as the docs could not say whwn i would have reached natural menopause.

I do agree Hurdity, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

I started sequi patches at coming up on 49 after being what I now realise was peri at about 47.
I stayed on sequi for almost three years. I then started to have break through bleeds throughout the month. I was checked out and all was fine but the bleeding continued.
My GP decided it was time to move to a conti. I was very unsure because of my age, so much so I emailed Dr Currie just to check this was the way to go. She backed up my GP and said it was fine. I have been on conti ever since.

It's what suits each individual and rules can be stretched to suit circumstances.

My GP was more clued up than I gave her credit for. There is really nothing to say we "must" have a bleed. As long as the womb lining is kept thin then what does it matter. After all, some very young women are on progesterone only pills and don't bleed for years. Why should we be any different.

My very first HRT (at age 51 1/2) was a conti one. It had only been 6 months since my last natural period, but I had also had a blood test done. It is possible to tell from those tests that you are post-meno? because I certainly didn't go the full 12 months before I was put onto a conti HRT.

My symptoms were pretty severe, and they literally hit me out of the blue like the proverbial brick, so maybe my hormones just took one almighty nose dive overnight..lol...

Dr Currie is the founder of this site and if you look at the home page then you will see there is an email facility. She is the expert on all things meno.

Obviously you have to take age factors into account when taking HRT but as Dr Currie told me there is nothing at all wrong with taking a combined HRT below the traditionally accepted age of being fully menopausal. There will always be fluctuations in results of blood tests so they are generally accepted as being unreliable.
If a woman has problems in tolerating continuous progesterone then it does become an issue but as I said the important thing is to keep the womb lining thin.

It's horses for courses I think. What suits one will not suit another. Personally I have been happy not having a bleed.
