Worst period pain.....ever!!!!
« on: August 10, 2014, 11:24:54 AM »

Had to change my HRT 3 days ago from elleste duet back to Climagest and Iv started the worst period Iv had in a few years!!

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen just isn't touching the pain, about 4 days before starting the period I have felt so depressed it was scary to be honest.

I have numerous fibroids and a thickening of the womb anyway so not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Lovely being a woman isn't it ??  >:( xx

Sounds nasty renee - hope you feel better soon.

It could be that HRT has caused your fibroids to grow. When did you last have a scan?

Hi Taz,

I came off Climagest about 3 months ago (had been on it for 18 months and felt great) as I had a few breakthrough bleeds and doc sent for a scan which showed I had numerous fibroids and a thickening of the womb, I didn't have any symptoms for fibroids etc so was a bit surprised!

I was put on Elleste Duet 3 months ago and it really hadn't suited me at all so now back on Climagest again. To say I have felt depressed is an under statement and a bit scary!

Not sure where I go from here and not sure if the pain at the moment is just due to a bad period because of changing HRT or the fibroid? Xxxx

I can remember the horrendous period pain which felt like child birth before my Hysterectomy for a very large fibroid, The HRT did make it grow.

The bliss of having the uterus removed and no more pain like that, though I did have some phantom period like cramps afterwards because I kept my cervix, but nothing like it was before.

Since I started my periods I always had period pain though, it just got worse during peri menopause.

Bet you were glad to get rid of periods silverlady and the pain!

Mine are always different but this one is bad...for whatever reason!!

That's the thing while going through the menopause, the goal posts seem to change all the time and you have to deal with each change as you go along. Xx

Have you been scanned recently Renee? You really need regular ones if you have fibroids and a thickened womb lining I would think  :-\

That's what I thought too Taz.....just got to tell my doc if there's changes with pain, bleeding etc.

I'm going to see what my next period us like as I will have been on the Climagest a full month by then, if it's as bad as this one I will contact the doc to get re scanned incase that's what's causing the pain. Xx

Hi renee

Just to add I wondered if you had considered or been offered the Mirena coil as the progestogen part of your HRT? This is recommended if you have fibroids if you look at the info on this site?

If you have fibroids and thickening already then the cyclical HRT is likely to exacerbate this. I agree with Taz - I would have thought you should have another scan and maybe suggest the Mirena - then you could go on oestrogen only HRT.

Fibroids
Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterine (womb) wall and are dependant on estrogen. They tend to shrink after the menopause but shrinkage may not occur, or they may even increase in size with HRT use. Increase is thought to occur in 25% of HRT users and mainly occurs in the first six months of therapy. There is some evidence that transdermal (patch or gel) but not tablet HRT nor tibolone may promote fibroid growth. [ref 24] Fibroid size can be monitored by regular examinations and sometimes by ultrasound scans. There is some evidence that the use of the progestogen releasing intra-uterine system, Mirena may cause fibroids to reduce in size. Mirena is often used in the perimenopause by women who have heavy periods and/or require contraception and can provide the progestogen part of their HRT.

Your spot on there Gladys, every day is different.

I too feel a bit better today...thank god!! Crying over the weekend, not out my pjs and crippled with pain. It's my hubby I feel for, he just looks at me and he does not understand what Im going on about!! Lol

Yes, your supposed to get a bleed after finishing each pack of elleste duet. When I was on the 1 mg of a Elleste I only ever got a light, browny period not really came to anything. Xx

Aww you must feel awful. Xx

I don't work, I used to work full time as an Administrator but due to this meno and other health problems at the moment I don't work but Im hoping to get back soon.

I knew that it was the HRT I was on, it just felt like really bad meno symptoms, I also have an under active thyroid so go got my bloods done but it was ok. I phoned my doc just before I was due to finish my first pack of the 2 mg elleste duet and said that I was sure that it wasn't agreeing with me and wasn't going to start another pack

I felt a big change within 2 days of being on the white tabs, bloating, very weak and tired, weepy etc xx

I finished the whole pack. Try and stick it out until the end of the white tabs then see how you feel.

Is this your first month on them?

If your worried or anxious just phone your doc who should give you a call back. Tell him /her how you feel and see what they say about your symptoms. Don't keep it to yourself. Xxx
