As I am feeling rather stressed and fed up ( you may have noticed lol) I thought I would freshen bungalow up and get it decorated. The decorator is a friend of husband . He is a cheerful chap but doesn't stop talking.  He haven't colour charts and I got some testers - why are there so many different shades of cream .  Anyway I chose gentle cream and he turned up today with 10 litres of the stuff and it was yellow. He admitted it was a bit yellowy.  So I picked another colour from a tester I had and chose that one so he went off to decorator centre and got 10 litres of gentle gold. He opened the tin and no kidding it was more yellow than the first.  He assured me it would dry lighter and so me being me said ok go ahead and proceeded to take mother to town 
I got home - decorator had left - walls are daffodil yellow.  I hate it.  He left a note sayng trade paints are quite often a different colour to the testers - why bother with testers then ??
So what to do ............I'd rather pay a bit more and get a colour I like.  This is costing me a lot on money - I have text him - he hasn't replied.  It doesn't bode well. ftp://

They always end up darker. However, we went so pale last time we should have saved our money on tinted paint & just bought white!  Thing is groundhog, if you're like me, you won't be happy until it's fixed.

Magnolia is a safe bet if you want cream.

I agree with CG, I wouldn't be happy until it's fixed. Is it just one room. ?

Is it possible that it may grow on you with the right curtains and cushions maybe.

Magnolia is a good all rounder. Builders of new houses still use it to this day.

Yellow is really tricky. It changes so much in different lights so is different throughout the day. I have yellow in my kitchen and it only really looks like I wanted it to in the early evening!

 I wish I had gone for magnolia but I thought it was boring - how wrong I was.  I am decorating the hallway, new bathroom and our bedroom.  We live in a bungalow and everywhere else is pretty neutral .  I don't think it will grow on me as it's yellow and my curtains bedding etc are beiges creams.  I'm a bit gutted as he is a nice chap and professional and he has done a great job but the colour is vile.  So I will be up early and hopefully sort it out as I wont be happy and it doesn't go with wallpaper I've bought. Poop !!!!

I couldn't put up with it either.  I would never go for magnolia because all the student accommodations my2 kids have lived in have been magnolia and it has put me off.
We have recently decorated and I bought 8 tester pots before I found one I liked. They are never the same as you expect.

They are never the same as the testers and one has to buy from the same batch or the colour alters again.  Perhaps ask him to cover it with a white ............... so that there is a glow through the top coat?

I'm boring too then, all because I won't do a feature wall in either another colour or put wallpaper on one wall. The fact I decorate is a feat in itself. Years ago I bought stencils to do borders. All that measuring etc was blooming hard work. It did look good, but I really can't be bothered nowadays. Decorating always causes fall outs between hubby & I, not the colours, but the decorating itself. Last time I did it myself, less stressful.

Hmmmm! Trade paints have to be the same as the testers unless they are a different company. I always put my testers on a piece of lining paper and pin to the wall. When I have one I like I give half of it to the decorator before he goes off to get paint. That way there is no excuse that the colour is wrong. A Dulux paint is a Dulux paint no matter where you buy it. But I do agree that different light in a room can have a marked effect on the colour.

Update ladies - the decorator agreed the colour really was awful and we have changed it to a very neutral light cream.  Looks much much better.  I phoned crown and they said they may be slight variation between trade and retail but not much.  They will investigate now - decorator will send samples off etc.
From now on it will be simple.  Although inmy defence I did get tester pots and squares of paper and was happy with the colour I had chosen.  It's only when I got the paint mixed the problem came in - seems lot a of companies may not get their machines calibrated which can cause these problems.
Sparkle I cried too!  My home is important to me and it's the only thing I feel in control of these days.  To have it painted nicotine yellow was really upsetting! 
All resolved now though - looks boringly better

What I have done in my bedroom the last few times, is to buy the bedcovers and then have a feature wall behind the bed painted with a colour from the bedcovers. Dulux have been really good in matching the colour from pillowcases that I have taken in. The other walls are off white, not Magnolia as I think that has a pinky overtone. The hall and the living room are painted using Dulux Light and Space paint which makes the rooms look brighter (my cottage has smallish windows so anything that adds more light is great).

How often do you paint the rooms in your house? Mine get done every 3-5 years but I don't know if that is often or not.

I only paint when absolutely necessary - have had much less energy for this kind of thing since the onset of meno    my Dad used to help but he's too old now    - last time the walls needed doing, one coat was all that was required, I simply covered the carpet with a dust sheet under the wall I was working on and painted when the mood took me. Once started I was spurred on by how much brighter the room looked and got it done in about three days. Had to stop halfway up the stairs though as I couldn't reach! A couple of years ago I asked a decorator to quote for the living room, stairwell and landing (very small house) and it came in at £1000!    Guess this included the window frames, skirting boards and spindles though which I never do if I can help it!

I've painted the chimney breast magnolia and the rest of the walls pale cream - it looks really nice and my thoughts are it will 'go' with anything. In the kitchen I painted a bright lime feature wall and matched up the curtains and small appliances. I do sometimes wonder how easy it will be to cover up when I tire of it, maybe it'll be that way for ever now - it's dawned on me in recent years why a lot of older people's houses look dated and I'm sure mine will be no exception...

I think the same. Even the thought now of emptying my bookcases so I can get the living room done, is putting me off! Goodness knows what I'll be like in 10 years time!

3-4 years  crickey our bedroom hasn't been touched since 2002.  Hall, stairs and landing are in my 'mediterraen phase', i.e. sky blue on the walls and a darker blue on radiator and under-stairs cupboard door.  DH re-did all the downstairs rooms this Spring apart from our lounge due to having to move a 7ft long book case - emptying that will take ages  so having shampooed the carpet and settee 2 weeks ago, that's it …… unless we get a very wet Winter 

The bedroom carpet will need replacing.  We turned and hoovered the mattress yesterday …… and when he hoovers in there he moves the whole bed and does underneath.  That's every 4 weeks then ……

Bedrooms have been 'done' in the last 4/5 years.  Bathroom gets a new coat every Autumn ……..

Glad it's sorted and you now like the colour.  However, we always buy tins of paint, never have it mixed on one of those machines because they will never mix the same each time.  Our rooms are huge so it isn't worth the risk, we buy 2 litre cans and keep to the same batch numbers  - however, there always seems to be 2" left in the bottom of the tins
