Hello

Hello ladies. Hope you're enjoying this lovely sunny weather!?

I am 48 years old and 7 weeks ago I had a total abdominal hysterectomy with both ovaries removed.  Everything was going well until the dreaded hot flushes started day and night.  I've just started taking sage tablets and waiting for a delivery of starflower tablets - first acupuncture session also booked for the start of next week.  I have discussed HRT with my GP, but I am concerned about the possible side effects and, when I do have to stop taking it, the hot flushes will resume.

Has anyone managed to control their hot flushes successfully having undergone a full hysterectomy the natural way or is HRT the only solution?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi, and welcome.  Ladies with far more knowledge will be along soon I am sure, but from what I have learnt it is very important for you to be on HRT until 50 to protect your heart and bones.

Hi and welcome Sandy18
I hope you are generally recovering well from the operation - your've had a tough time.
You are far too young to be without some form of oestrogen so I'm surprised you have not automatically been put on some HRT.  As you don't have a uterus you may only need oestrogen and this gives far fewer side effects - if any - in fact you will probably find you will quickly feel a lot better and hopefully get most of the meno symptoms under control.  It's the progesterone that tends to cause the problems.  You don't say why you had the hysterectomy? Occasionally the doctors prescribe combined HRT post op if it's appropriate.
At your age, HRT is important as you need to protect your heart and bones.
No herbs or remedies will do this.
Do read up all the info under the headings to the left of this screen. Don't believe all the scares about HRT - yes there can be side effects but if HRT relieves the horrible meno symptoms and gives you a quality of life then some minor side effects are worth putting up with.
I personally don't believe there is a "Natural Way' - this is only for those lucky ladies who don't experience bad meno symptoms.  I've tried every herb and remedy going  - what a waste of money. In controlled trials there has been no real evidence that herbs and remedies work  - not even phytoestrogens.
Don't worry about stopping HRT - there may be no real reason to come off it for at least the next 12 years for you - particularly if you only need oestrogen.  You can take a break when you are 60 and see how things are. Some find a slow withdrawal helps but you shouldn't worry about that now - get your quality of life back and let the future take care of itself.
I had a premature menopause (from mid 30s) so had to use HRT for 20 odd years.  Now 58 i've been off HRT for 9 months now and the flushes haven't been too bad. We are all different.  Whether you take HRT or not, the flushes, night sweats etc. can go on for many years.
If you can just have oestrogen, can I suggest you ask for Oestrogel as this gives you control over the dosage - (patches are another option but less controllable).  You can start with just one squirt per day applied to your arms or legs for the first 3-4 weeks and you can increase to up to 4 squirts per day if need be.  Most women find 2 quirts per day is enough to control the flushes.  This type of HRT is described as trans-dermal HRT and it means nothing goes through the liver so causes fewer side effects. The oestrogen is bio-identical which means it is identical to our own hormones - so this is the 'Natural Way' to relieve meno symptoms.
I hope this is helpful.  Do keep us posted.  Dg x

Thank you Dancinggirl for your detailed reply.

After many weeks of research, I decided to try Oestrogel as I couldn't continue with the awful symptoms that I was experiencing.  I've been using the Oestrogel for a week, applying 2 squirts at bedtime as prescribed by my GP.  The hot flushes have reduced considerably and I feel so much better.  However, I started to feel light headed and dizzy a couple of days after starting the hrt. I've had my blood pressure checked and it was slightly elevated.  Has anyone else experienced dizziness with hrt?  I'm hoping things will settle down and appreciate that it can take a few weeks for this to happen.

Hi sandy18
Please don't be anxious about the Oestrogel - your body has to adjust and as you begin to get the full benefit of decent sleep and fewer flushes you will start to get your life back. I expect your body is dizzy with joy that it is finally getting what it needs!!! Do remember you are protecting your heart and bones - you do not want to suffer in the long term because of oestrogen deficiency now.  Slightly elevated blood pressure now and again can happen at any time whether you are on HRT or not  - I think you are looking for side effects because you are anxious about HRT - you've listened to too many scares. You are lucky because you don't have to use progesterone which is usually the part of combined HRT that gives the problems. There isn't even any added risk of breast cancer with oestrogen only HRT.

I detect that you are feeling somehow a failure because you are using HRT- that you should be doing the 'Natural Way'. You would be failing yourself and those around you if you didn't use HRT.  I had to use HRT from my mid 30s due to premature menopause and it took me ages to find an HRT regime that suited me - the progesterone was always a problem for me as I still had a uterus. I am now 58 and I've been off HRT for nearly a year, the flushes haven't been too bad but I do miss the energy I had while on HRT.
As you are on oestrogen only HRT there may be no reason why you should not use this for the rest of your life. When you get to 60 you can possibly just reduce the amount you use.
Try not to worry - you are doing the right thing. Keep us posted. DGx
