Health Anxiety - a Question
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:25:22 PM »

Hello ladies.

I'm having a bad day and I'm starting to think that I have a horrible illness. The rational part of me thinks this is nonsense but the emotional part is working hard to convince me that it's true ( now I sound crazy as well ). Could this be the health anxiety that I've seen other ladies comment on? I do have IBS which plays up when I'm anxious which is often these days, and Ulcerative Colitis which is being controlled by medication atm but that is all. I guess my brain believes that feeling so cr&p all the time must be due to something other than hormones.

Do other ladies have similar experiences? I thought health anxiety was usually in response to a sudden event or unusual pain, which is at least logical whereas I seem to be inventing  health problems  to worry about.

Thank you for reading this ladies, just knowing you're there is a comfort. Jeez, what a day so far!

Wishing everyone well and a  to those in need.

Thanks for the hug!  Trouble is , we potter along during our teens with a support network, we mvoe on to jobs/holidays/relationships - then wham, suddenly we have every fatal illness there might be going  :sigh: ............  and not as much support!

What's the worst that could happen?  I was faced with breast disease in 1995, still here  ;). I have on-going anxiety, 1st panic attack aged 3.  Strangely enough, adrenaline kicked in whilst going through diagnosis, treatment, follow ups  ::) - then the anxiety took over again.  Damn it.

Also we see others apparently 'getting on' with Life without problems and wonder if this is it!  every ache and pain might be 'the end', certainly if I get a headache I take Nurofen otherwise my brain starts telling me it's a tumour .........

I have this too and because most of my problems are IBS and stomach related it's a vicious circle. The more I worry the worse it gets and then I worry more and so on it goes.
I get up in the morning and wait to see how things will be. Do I have a sore stomach, do I need to dash to the loo.
It's hellish to think that this might be it for ever because I don't want to live my life like this.

At least you are not alone which is really no help at all  ::)

I think my health anxiety started when my mum and dad died (my mum from a stroke) I was 53, up until then I took not feeling well in my stride, a headache was just a headache ext.

For me it was nothing to do with hormones just life, I had never thought of my mortality, the shock of it all was the catalyst , I have conquered  it now up to a point, now and when it arises, I tell myself I have had the ailments before and I am still here.

I find knowing you are not alone does help. I have had IBS since I was 14, though it was not diagnosed till I was in my 30s. I am now 60. It does affect your life and because of that I have sought help from various sources. In the early days, I felt isolated, as you didn't talk about these things. Now you can and it is amazing how many people have some kind of digestive illness.

I do have low days, but try to work round the needs of my digestive system. I don't work anymore and lost out on career opportunities when I did. I think about what I can do rather than what I can't do. For example, 9 years ago I travelled round the world, some of the time camping. I wasn't keen. What if my IBS became really bad? But my husband really needed this trip, so I agreed. We went to English speaking countries, where I could source food I could eat and where I could get medical help if the need arose. Did I have challenges? Absolutely! Did I have need medical help? Yes. I just got on with it and stayed in hotels when things were bad. I met kind people along the way, all with their own challenges. My husband and I looked after each other.

So do those things you want to do, just adjust to accommodate the inconveniences of any condition you may have. Do what you can whether at home or out in the community. It helps take the focus off yourself and how you are feeling. Some days you can't, but that's ok. Have a pyjama/duvet day. Seek help when you need it and be honest with friends and family.

PS I recommend having a nice bathroom and a good book for those days when you see a lot of each other!

PSS My lovely grandson aged 21 months got me through last year when I was ill. Best medicine ever!

Hello ladies and thank you all for your replies.

The last few weeks I have been waking up at 5 am due to flushing and been unable to get back to sleep, I've then spent the rest of the day exhausted and believing I'm really ill.

The sleep disturbance may be due to the flushing and I've managed to get a GP appointment for later today and I will ask for an increase in my patch (I'm using 50 mcg atm and I'll ask for 75 or 100 mcg ). In many ways I don't want to increase my HRT but I am at a loss as to what to try next.

I will report back this evening as I know many ladies are struggling with similar problems and may be interested to know what my doctor prescribes.

Thanks once again for your comments and take care everyone.

My health anxiety started when I lost my parents. I was 25 when my dad died from cancer and 28 when my mother was killed by a hit and run. At the time my children where very young and I found it very difficult to cope.  Believe it or not over the last 5 years lego has helped me take my mind off things.

Hello ladies, reporting back as promised.

My GP has increased my Evorel patch from 50mcg to 75mcg in an effort to conquer the flushing. My pharmacy are out of stock atm so I will need to wait until tomorrow to begin using them but if I notice an immediate improvement I'll be sure to let you know!

The doctor I saw today was not my usual GP and only works one day a week at the practice. When I mentioned this site, saying how helpful it was he told me that he knows  Dr Currie as they were at med school together. He also mentioned that in his experience there are two types of women, those who barely notice the menopause and those who seem to have every problem you can think of ( I think we know which category we fall into ladies).

Take care ladies and I'll keep you posted.

If I were you I would not just stick on the stronger patch immediately. I would cut a bit off it and let my body get accustomed to the higher dose for a few weeks and then increase again. That way you cut down on the risk of side effects such as nausea and feeling shaky.
You may well be fine but a lot of women find a sudden increase difficult to cope with.

Easy and small steps is often the better way to go.
