Hi again everybody! Had my scan this morning a lovely nurse specialist did it. She took a history first and talked me and my husband through everything. My lining was 4.7mm thick that and the fact that I had 2 previous bleeds made her take a biopsy. She will ring on Monday with the results so I don't have to wait for a letter. She has reassured me that everything from the scan looked good and that she feels the biopsy will come back clear. Quite painful during biopsy and still got pains and heavy bleeding afterwards (4 1/2 hours later) told that the pain is normal but I have the number of a ward to contact if the bleeding does not stop soon.
So I feel encouraged by her comments but I want those results. xxx

I'm so glad she was able to reassure you at least somewhat, my ultrasound tech did too and she was correct, both times.

I had a lot of bleeding after my biopsy, so much so, when I stood up, I bled onto the floor, ugh.

I had bleeding and clotting for several days and then it slowed down to just a wipe on the toilet paper .. it lasted every bit of a week to 10 days. That biopsy is like taking a potato peeler to your uterus.

Good that it went OK. What did they do about the Mirena?

Thankyou everyone. Not the most comfortable experience but over now!! Bleeding is now reduced to spotting but I still have some period like pain. Nobody is concerned about the effectiveness of the mirena and say it should still be functioning fully even at nearly  4 and 1/2 years after his insertion! !! Nothing mentioned about taking it out or replacing it. X

Hello did you get your biopsy results yet ?

Hi Patientone and everybody out there who has offered help and advice I got my results today and everything was clear "no sign of malignancy" she said
I am on top of the world tonight!!
The biopsy showed progesterone changes to the lining which she said proves that the mirena is still active. I have no idea what that means in practical terms though. Any ideas anybody?
It was recommended that I go and have a chat with my GP about next steps. I have no idea really what to expect or what I want or need to do?? I'm not having any menopausal symptoms since the bleeds started so do I need to do anything at the moment?
I would love to hear any opinions, ideas or stories which might help in my decision making.
I was very fortunate but I would say that anyone with any concerns or fears to go and see your GP and get it investigated. Yes, it was very scary but to have the investigations done, so quickly your mind can be put at rest or be early at making a diagnosis whatever it may be.

That is WONDERFUL news ! I had a feeling it would be ok, but once we are in the powermill, nothing will ease our minds completely other than that pathology report.

I am sure you and your Dr will agree on next steps, but for today, enjoy this good news.

So glad to hear all is OK!! Great news!

The Mirena coil is licensed for 4 years to use as the progestogen part of HRT (ie when women are taking oestrogen too) but for 5 years as contraception - and as you have been informed it is clearly still working so you don't need to worry as you are not taking any extra oestrogen. Sounds like your lining is in a healthy state too.

What progesterone does is change the cells in the womb lining from proliferative ( they're growing and multiplying) to secretory (the cells change so that they prepare for the fertilised egg - I think they store more protein etc but I've forgotten the detail!). As far as I recall the progestogen interferes with the oestrogen receptors and stops the lining from growing any more when given continuously - that's an approximation of the process anyway!

If you are not having any symptoms then perhaps wait for a while - you are very lucky in that your cycle must have restarted causing the bleeding, despite the Mirena, and you have sufficient oestrogen to keep symptoms at bay.

I can't remember how old you are but if your symptoms do return and your cycle stops completely then do consider oestrogen replacment (as HRT) - but if you do, you will definitely need the Mirena replaced - which you probably should do in any case in 6 months time - if you are using it for contraception as well.

Thank you for your support. Wow Hurdity, you seem to know your stuff! Are you a professional? You have really helped me to understand what is happening to my body. Why don't we know more as women about our bodies or am I just an exception?! I somehow don't think so judging by the use of this forum! We learn about periods at a comparatively early age but as for the menopause  I had never heard of the perimenopause stage until talking on here. Surely there must be a case for more menopause clinics for women like us? I am so glad I found this forum xx
