Hi all,

I had a hysterectomy at 29, I was on HRT for 16 years then the doc took me off it as I started to suffer from very bad migraine which I never used to get, I havent had HRT now for 4 years and I havent had a migraine now since being off HRT.

The past week I have been suffering from hot flushes or flashes not sure what they are called, just happened suddenly one night, I have a few at night and during the day about 3 or 4 of them. 

Are these related to the menopause, im 49 now.

Im due at the docs a week on Friday to see whats going on.

Hi sharr  - yes, hot flushes/flashes/sweats are very common during the lead up to menopause (peri menopause) menopause and post menopause. They are caused by low levels of oestrogen. If you look at the menu on the left of the screen you will find information on alternative therapies which work for some women. It may also be possible for you to try a different HRT which wont give rise to migraine.

Sharr - Hot flushes have been linked to the menopause, Taz explains it well.

I think HRT in the form of patches is less likely to cause migraines, it may be worth enquiring about.

Hi all,

just a quick update, I went to the docs, she has said I am a too young to be going through the change  I have to go back on Friday to have bloods taken she is testing me for basically all sorts, I had to give a urine sample too.

Did you have your ovaries removed when you had your hyster Sharr?

Good that your GP is being thorough but not sure where she is coming from when she claims 49 is too young for menopause???

I agree with tiger - especially as you had HRT prescribed at the age of 29! If you were considered old enough for menopause then how can you not be old enough twenty years later? Very confusing for you!

You are def not too wrong, what is it with these GP's! And it is well  known, that women who have had a hysterectomy can also go through a bit earlier. Why were you put on hrt so young if you were not menopausal? There are lots of options, perhaps, try the more friendlier bio identical gel it should not aggravate your migraines and you can adjust the dosage up or down according to your symptoms,  which is great.  I wouldnt go off Hrt just yet, you are still fairly young and your bones and heart need protecting. All the best, blood results are not 100% accurate, your symptoms are a far better way of knowing whats what.

I just want to echo what has been said already.

I was getting the hot flushes and palps before I started on Evorel 50 patches.  All seems to have settled now but still get them but much lighter.

Why don't you have a think about the patches?

Hi Taz, no my ovaries were kept as they said I was too young to have them removed...but they died after 6 months of me having my hyster...

Cassie - I was taken off HRT by my doctors apparently the migraines were the first signs of having a stroke!  so the doc says so I have been off HRT now for about 3/4 years.  They wont put me back on it either..

Yes but one gets different types and I was thinking of a more "friendlier" transdermal hrt such as the gel. Do you have high blood pressure?

It says  " What are the risks of HRT for women with migraine?

There is no research based evidence to suggest that women who have migraine and are using HRT have an increased risk of having a stroke (ischemic CVA)."

I think it would be worth going back to your GP for further advice - or change to one who has more HRT knowledge maybe?

There is an increased risk of stroke for people on the pill who have migraine with aura and people have been taken off it recently - maybe that is muddying the waters a bit.  I think the guidelines for contraception changed around 2007.

I looked for information about hrt and migraine when this happened to me, in case the same applied, but it does not.

My doctor has prescribed hrt recently, with no questions.  (actually, there were not many questions about anything

Hi all, thanks for the replies, I will see what my blood results come back as and if all if clear I will discuss HRT with another of the docs from the surgery.

Cassie - no I dont suffer from high blood pressure.

But its strange that I have never had a migraine since being off HRT, never had any before I started the HRT, seems odd that I got them after 16 years being on HRT  and very serious ones which made me temporarily blind, never experienced anything like that before.....  frightened me too....

I used to have those sort of migraines when I was a teenager Sharr so I can remember how frightening they were. Different types of HRT have different effects so a patch or gel may be much kinder to you. Only you can decide as to how much your meno symptoms are impacting on your life but I think that if they are affecting you then a change of HRT will be worth a try.

As you have probably found out there are many types of migraine - some of them without pain even - and retinal migraines can cause temporary blindness. It sounds as if you had that type.
