Has HRT made you pile on weight?
« on: June 02, 2014, 06:26:03 PM »

I only started HRT just over a month ago and I have put on nearly a stone in weight!
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the numbers on the scale :-\

I feel hungry all the time and I'm trying to cast my mind back and think did I used to feel this hungry when I had hormones? :-\

Anybody else battling with their weight since starting HRT?
and Why does HRT cause a person to gain weight anyway?  (as if we don't have enough problems!)

I like the way its made my face look a bit fuller (therefore a teeny bit younger?), but not so keen on how its filling my backside out at the same time!

There's more of me as well, for me it's not just HRT there's Gabapentin as well.

Spoke to GP, she said because we feel better (with both HRT and Gabapentin), we then feel hungrier so then eat more, then weight goes on............

It's difficult to tell, I do feel hungrier so perhaps she might be correct, didn't think I was eating more though   ???

I've definitely been eating more, so I have no excuse ;D

One good thing though, is the weight seems to be going to my thighs and hips, so I feel as if I'm getting more of my womanly shape back, if that makes sense .
(I was starting to get thin old lady legs) and a thick waist..    but now the tops of my legs seem to be getting more of a youthful, rounded look.  I think jeans are looking better on.

I just don't want too much of it back.

I did put some on then stopped smoking and gained even more :o  I've stepped up my exercise regime now though to combat it and although I've possibly only lost a few pounds I'm much more toned than I was.  Is there anything near you that you could try, swimming perhaps or a gym you could join?

5:2 diet works wonders , you dont have to be as restrictive as suggested , but appreciate your comments on the little old lady legs and the fat middle, that made me laugh, what I want to know is how people end up with boobs around their knees, just another horror lurking over the horizon,  ;D

On the patches for 2 1/2 years and have not put on any weight thankfully. I have reduced my portions to tea plate size and try to keep active as i am fully aware that the weight can creep on during the menopause.

There is a lot of info on this site about menopause and weight gain and the possible effect of HRT
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/diet.php
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/weightgain.php

Mostly it is to do with metabolic changes that occur as we get older - and we have to eat less and exercise more to keep to the same weight.

I eat far less than I used to and I am on permanent low fat diet just to keep the pounds at bay. Unfortunately for me, being well post-menopuase, even HRT can't give me my shape back - the thickened waist has become permanent although I keep my figure as much as I can by exercise, diet and flattering choice of clothes. Boobs at least are still full - the effect of added oestrogen in HRT.

Yep me too, been on HRT for about three years, not sure it is all down to HRT as I'm also on thyroxin and Nortriptyline for my ms nerve pain.

Start weight was 71/2 stone slowly crept up to 9st 12 i  stuck to that weight for quite a while, but since my dog had to bE put to sleep last October I've now gone up to 10.5 aah ! However have new puppy coming next Saturday so hopefully I might be able to get back down 9 st 12 again I refuse to buy size 16 jeans!

I think walking is a good excercise especially as I have ms.

Hi Smokey

I too have MS.  Have had it for 12 years now and I am not sure if he weight gain is down to the HRT or the Gabapentin I take for nerve pain.

I know that the Gabapentin has helped the hot flushes.

Hi Shazza,

How are you doing with your ms and meno symptoms, I don't get any real hot flushes at all now I'm on HRT and wonder if they have been also helped with the Nortriptyline as I've heard certain antidepressants can help, as i started them at the same time as HRT I guess I'll never know.
It was when I started to reduce them I then realised they had been covering up the nerve pain, they were originally prescribed for heavy head and tension headaches.

I've had the ms for nearly four years, I've had really bad fatigue on and off but also I was found to be anemic and also have underactive thyroid all contributing to the fatigue. However the last 10 days have been really good, hardly any fatigue at all!

I was told I was insulin resistant when I started HRT and advised keep to a low carb diet. I was reasonably slim with very slim hips and bum and legs, but there was very little difference in my waist and hip measurements. I have a very strong family history of type 2 diabetes, so I took this as a warning. Plus my son has just qualified as a paramedic and is on my case! I have lost a stone and am very slowly losing weight still. Unfortunately, my boobs aren't shrinking! Size 14 top and size 10 bottom half. But I do have a waist!

I know everyone is different, but you do have to be motivated for yourself. You have to really look at what you are eating. Sugar is hidden in lots of food. Even natural sugars should be eaten sparingly. I intend to seek nutritional advice when I can afford to, just to make sure I am eating as healthy and varied diet as I can, so that my weight doesn't increase again.
