Could I be taking too much oestrogen
« on: June 02, 2014, 03:20:52 PM »

Hi

I've made a lot of posts about getting onto a different HRT but after reading various replies from  you ladies, I now wonder if I am on too much oestrogen.

I am about to start on the progesterone phase of my HRT today of the femoston 2/10 but I am wondering if I should try stopping taking it to see how I go.

Would I be ok if I stopped taking it today?

I am only 47 and perimenopausal and was wondering if 2/10 is too much.

Sorry to ask all these questions, maybe the 1/10 was ok for me, even though my flushes were much worse - maybe I could take something else to stop the flushes.

If you feel reasonably 'well' on your current regime why alter it?  You've had advice in the other thread, some of which I understand   â€¦â€¦.   but as I am not taking any HRT I can't be much help.  Is it better to stick with what you are on for another 3/4 months than risk your mental health deteriorating?  We are headed towards the Summer when we should feel brighter  ;) - our bodies need time to adjust and this can be as long as 12-18 months!

Do you mean stop taking HRT completely?.
Not sure why you would want to do this when you are getting quite good symptom control.

Everyone has to weigh up the pros and cons of HRT. Are the side effects easier to cope with than full blown meno symptoms.

Only you will know how much being HRT free impacts on your daily life.

If you do decide to stop then I would complete your monthly course and stop then. Apart from it being the correct way to stop it will also give you time to consider things rather than just jumping in too quickly.

Also you worry about talking to your GP - how will she react if you suddenly stop treatment?  Sometimes the only way to find out whether we are worse without treatment is to stop but this should always be done under supervision and with your GP's advice.  Otherwise your GP is not 'up to date' with your treatment and this can be seen as un-ethical!  I had a GP once who was of the opinion that if she prescribed treatment which the patient then refused to try, she didn't want to see them again!

Hi Ladies

I won't just stop taking it after reading your replies.

I am just worrying cos my anxiety is getting much worse and this is what made me wonder if I was taking too much oestrogen.
My anxiety is getting as bad as when I was in valium withdrawal, even though I am off valium and totally recovered, I started to recover from valium when I was on the lower doses cos I did a really sllllllllllooooow taper.
I'm already on trazodone and quetiapine and these help me sleep, it's just those horrible thoughts that I am plagued with.
It's weird cos 2/10 is better at controlling my flushes than 1/10 was.

What would be the symptoms if my oestrogen dose was too high?

I'm just desperate to get rid of this  horrible anxiety and depression. I thought I had got rid of it when I healed off valium withdrawal symptoms.

Valium was used many years ago and now different medications are prescribed for depression and others for anxiety.  Are you still seeing a Psychiatrist, you may have told me but in my older age I've forgotten  :-\

Hi

No, I got discharged from mental health services in 2011.
Our mental health services changed the way they worked then.
They now only deal with proper fully fledged crisis cases.

If my femoston was too strong, how would I be feeling?

Thanks

Can't help.  I think you need to let the medication do it's work  ;) ………. this isn't like mental health medications they are designed differently.  The other person you could talk with privately is your local Pharmacist.  Take a list of queries and make an appt..

Our bodies are designed to get rid of anything that it doesn't require, apart from iron which it can store.  So I expect that anything that the body doesn't require extra hormones it will deposit it via the urine.  Something to check with your Pharamacist?

Ummmm, don't think it quite works that way with hormones CLKD. Certain vitamins yes hormones no.

Can you talk to your GP about your anxiety and depression. As she is very familiar with you health problems perhaps she can change your meds to something that would help a bit more.

You sound as if you are stressed regarding your flat lease. Perhaps if you got that sorted life and meno would be more manageable.

Hi Dandelion

I got the impression from your posts that you were no longer taking other medication, and just taking HRT but I see you are taking two other anti-depressants I think - the two mentioned?

I imagine you are on these for a reason - because you need them and if you do have some underlying depression or anxiety then it may well recur from time to time ( I don't know anything about these conditions).

What you musn't do is to start worrying about whether you are having too much oestrogen - this is unlikely with tablets - unless your own oestrogen levels become very high one month? 2 mg Femoston is a normal amount to take in peri/post menopause. Oestrogen is not usually associated with anxiety for most women - there may be one or two who react negatively to external oestrogen in tablet form but oestrogen is the feel good hormone for reasons I have explained elsewhere.

Levels higher than we experience physiologically can cause a resumption in symptoms (flushes and sweats)  which are not alleviated by further increases in dose, and sudden increases can also cause temporary side effects. I doubt either of these are happening in your case.

Try not to worry about your HRT and concentrate on dealing and coping with any other worries in your life - which honeybun refers to but I cannot see from your post below.
