Feeling very shaky in the mornings
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:45:56 AM »

For months now I've been waking up feeling very shaky. It lasts for an hour or two and seems more physical than emotional. I'm on Citalopram for anxiety but this hasn't made any difference to how I feel first thing.

Is this just another meno symptom, caused by hormone fluctuations?

Hello Tabbycat.

This happens to me as well, I call it 'the jitters' and I'm sure it is hormonal. It usually lasts until mid morning and then fades away as the day goes on, only to return again the next day. I've been experiencing this for quite a while but the last week or so it has definitely lessened.
For the last five months I have been using Evorel patches and Utrogestan and recently began using the Utrogestan vaginally instead of orally. This recent improvement may be the result of the HRT finally kicking in which may have taken this long as I am post meno.

If you want to try HRT there are many knowledgeable ladies here who can advise you but I wanted you to know that you are not alone in this and I am convinced it is another meno symptom.

Take care.

Thanks Kathleen.

I am actually on HRT - been on it a year - and it's helpful for the joint aches and heat intolerance but isn't making any difference to the shakes! As long as it's just another meno symptom, it's just annoying rather than scary.

Hi Tabbycat and Kathleen.

I get this too.  Like you say usually lasts until lunchtime.  I am sure it is a hormone thing.

My HRT patches have helped because I used to wake in the night feeling this way but I don't now.

Hi tabbycat

I get this too. I take Citraopam 30mgs and still get shaky on waking, once i get going I am find, only for it to return again the next morning.

Meno?? I don't know but I do know it doesn't hurt me so I just accept it

You haven't eaten since when? and so your body will feel shaky.  Try a biscuit/glass of milk/porridge an hour before bed.  To line the stomach.  Have a biscuit before you get out of bed each morning.

You begin to feel better because your brekkies has kicked in  ;)

I agree with CLKD i would get this if i didnt eat properly to keep the blood sugars right.  Try having a light wholegrain snack before bed such as ryvita or slice of brown bread.  x

Thanks, I will try the snack thing - although I'm finding the citalopram makes me hungry at odd times so I do often have a snack in the evening. The shakiness I get doesn't feel like low blood sugar, though, I get that sometimes and it's different (but hard to explain why!).

Hi Tabbycat - I don't get the shakes that you describe but I do get the low blood sugar shakes now and again and yes they are unmistakeable once you've experienced them. These type of shakes are accompanied by feeling very hot and cold and sweaty and extremely irritable with a desperation for something to eat or something sweet! Low blood sugar shakes are more likely to occur the more sugar/refined carbs you eat generally, which leads to excess insulin production (think I've got this right!)

To me it sounds much more like the effect of your medication ( ie ADs) and its effect on your metabolism? However low blood sugar shakes first thing in the morning may well feel different - (I've only ever had them while I'm up and about) so can't be a bad thing to make sure you keep your levels as stable as possible.

Yeah, that!  :)

It's very different to what I get in the mornings. I don't think it's caused by the ADs as I've only been on them a few weeks. I thought it was stress related, due to work, but I'm not working at the moment so it can't be that.

Knowing others get the same thing is reassuring. I seem to be worrying about everything at the moment. :(

Eating correctly ALL DAY is important.  Building up energy levels and remembering not to over-do it when you do feel well!  Slow release foods ………. snacking, grazing ……….  ;)

CLKD will have us all twice the size very soon.  ::)

When I feel anxious the last thing I feel like doing is eating. Food just won't go down.

I'm the same Honeybun  :'( which is why it's important to graze so that we eat before our body needs the energy input ...... I get this at around 3.30-4.00 p.m. too - cuppa time  ;)
