Transvaginal Scan
«

Hi Ladies
I am off to have the above tomorrow and just need some questions answered. Firstly, I'm a terrible hypochondriac, which has become incredibly worse over the past year, since all my peri symptoms started. The reason I am having it is because I actually asked my doc to send me for it, as I was frightened something is wrong underneath. My last period lasted 18 days (last week of it was very light though) and since then I have had awful lower backache and an increase in mucous (TMI, I know). So, he agreed and anyway, he told me that the lady who is doing it will tell me if it's normal. My main concern is if she tells me nothing and says the results will be sent to the doc, do I have to worry that she has found something awful.. I am really scared and have been having horrible catastrophic thoughts. Also I am currently ovulating, so will this make her see stuff that normally she wouldn't? Please help if you can put my mind at rest. It's my birthday today and It really has spoilt my day

Hi Mandy
You poor thing, so sorry the worry has spoilt your birthday- not completely I hope.
What you are feeling is quite normal I think the vast majority of us on here have convinced ourselves we have some sort of terrible illness at some point or another and is it any wonder given all the weird things that keep going on with our bodies at our time of life?!
I had a transvaginal scan last week ( I am post menopause and had had some spotting after two years of no periods). Obviously I had convinced myself that I had all sorts of horrible things wrong and I was shaking so much when I got there I could barely walk!!
Mine was done by my gynaecologist who was lovely, I explained what had happened and he really put me at ease before he did the scan.It only takes a few minutes and you will probably have a nurse with you too. Certainly no worse than having a smear and actually far more comfortable. He talked me through what he could see and said everything looks normal and that the cause of my spotting is probably due to vaginal atrophy ( dryness) which is easily treatable.
The fact that you are ovulating shouldn't make too much difference as he /she will be able to tell- they know what they are looking at and mucus can come and go so try not to worry too much about that. I do know exactly how you feel but tell yourself you are definitely doing the right thing and it is far better to get things checked out than to worry yourself silly.
Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

bless you for the kind words! It won't be a gyno who does it but just a sonographer (hope that is the right term), so not sure if she will talk me through it like you were. However, I will tell her all my concerns beforehand and hopefully I get a nice one that will make things easier for me. xx

thanks Mrs January, my concern though is that they won't say anything if they find a problem, whereas I know they will tell me if it's fine... that's why I'm worried xx

Am sure if you tell he/ she how worried you are they will do their best to put your mind at rest. I am sure we're not the only ones to get in such a state- they must be used to it!

Hi Mandy - you have my sympathies. I am a terrible worrier and also have to endure endless checks and scans owing to ongoing medical stuff. I have trans vsginal scans every 4 months to monitor a ovarian cyst. I don't think they are allowed to say one way or another unless your GP maybe has explained your anxieties. I had a normal ultrasound last month and the radiographer spent a awful long time on one area and said nothing. I did worry as I thought she has see something terrible, it turned out to be nothing significant.
It's so difficult not to worry but hopefully she will put your mind at rest. If not the try and not go to places you need not go, as chances are it will be fine.
Xx

I'll be honest Groundhog, I never go near the docs, if I can help it. But the fears I was having due to the symptoms I have wer spiralling out of control and I had convinced myself I have every cancer known to man. I plucked up the courage and went to see him and tried to take back control, but now I kind of wish I hadn't, as I am so sick with worry xx

Health anxiety is very common and has been talked about on the forum before....lots of times....so you are not alone.
Have you thought about talking this through with your GP. They can refer you for CBT and that might help you a lot.

I have had CBT in the past as I have been like this (but not as bad) since I was 17. If I get through all of this, I will address this xx

Just to let everyone know I had the scan and thank the Lord, everything was normal!! I am so relieved, there is no better feeling than when you get peace of mind. The sonographer was an absolute angel and talked me through everything. Thanks to everyone who offered support as it really made me go through with it today and I am so glad I did!!
