2014 - A New Challenge
« on: May 23, 2014, 06:48:09 PM »

10 years ago my hubby bought me an acoustic guitar and it has been sat in the corner, in its case, ever since.  A friend offered to teach me to play it so I took up his offer, 10 days ago.

My 2014 Challenge is to learn to play it confidently ... already after a 2 hr lesson, I can play "The Leaving Of Liverpool" by The Spinners, a basic 3 note tune but I can play it, in a fashion. My next target is to play "Living Next Door to Alice" but have 3 weeks to learn the necessary notes and practice my scales.

What challenge have you set yourself for 2014 ?

I am so impressed.

Many many years ago I could play the piano, really quite well, up to 8th grade. We don't have room for a piano but some day soon I would love a keyboard and learn to play again.

Keep up the great work and most of all enjoy it. Both of my kids play guitar and my youngest played a tuba (which was bigger than her) and enjoy music of all sorts.
My other instrument was the clarinet which I played in the school orchestra.

Keep us posted with your progress.

From the age of 8 I played the piano, recorder, clarinet and guitar and did ballet: whereas I wanted to go horse riding.  Don't' do any of it now …...

There are many U-tube 'teach yourself' snippets on line these days!  Once the basics are mastered, off you go!

My challenge for 2014 is not musical but it is to make my garden a lot better this year. I found some photos that were taken of it about 8 years ago and realised I had let it go a bit in the intervening years. Not any more! I have primped it quite a bit and sent away for some plants to extend the flowering season a bit. I am expecting big things from it this year!

I love my garden. And I love garden centre mooching. The smaller ones sell the best plants at the best prices and I found a little gem a few weeks ago.

Good luck with getting things the way you want Bramble and most of all enjoy.

Son, just bought guitar. Hubby got to grade 3 classical guitar. Very impressed HB, grade 8!

My back garden, plants are in pots. Really should be in ground, but hubby won't let me. Front garden was landscaped a few years back. Still struggling to stop rabbits nibbling, but so far as I can tell they don't like Azaleas.

As for challenges, does clearing out garage count?  ;)

Nothing fit for selling, been in there too long. Rusty, mouldy, smelly.

Really want to get back into sewing. My daughter's new machine is calling. I would like to make some new cushion covers and have always fancied making a Roman blind.

Honeybun, hats off to you for being able to sew.  You'll be able to have exactly the look you want in your home, which I think is fantastic.   Fascinated to hear about your musical background and family, too!

I'm learning something new to play at the end a concert in few months' time, which is a bit mad because they say you shouldn't do that - "Always perform things you know!" (Gulp!) So my challenge is to get this music ready to play at the end of a service in July, to give it an airing. (Double gulp!)  It's a hot favourite of mine, and I'm determined to manage it.

Thanks dulciana, my lot are very artistic and I just try hard  ::)  Good luck with your new piece of music. I hope it goes really well for you.

CLKD...I would love to be able to have the freedom that you have. Hubby and I really want to spread our wings while we can but it's not to be at the moment due to other commitments. Enjoy every moment that you can.

Dulciana - You say this new piece is a hot favourite of yours?
That is so much of the battle, you know what it could / should sound like.
OK, so you haven't played it in front of people yet, but you are well on the way.
You will be fine
Could be worse - you could be sight reading   :o
