So sad to see this magnificent building, going up in flames today. Daughter & I toured around it some 15 or so years ago. They say some stuff has been saved. But the poor students whose work has been lost & can never be replaced. Many art students were in tears, as was Muriel Gray, herself an ex student at Glasgow School of Art.

I have been and it was/ is beautiful. I hope they will be able to restore it to its former glory. Charles Rennie McIntosh left Glasgow a wonderful legacy.

My daughter applied and got through to final interviews. Lost out on the final lap and was told to reapply the following year. She went on to do something different but there was always a sadness she did not get in. Such a wonderful place and how do those students replace the work.

This building is appreciated across the world.

Just told my daughter, who's on a train at the moment and hadn't heard this awful news.  She's a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art (Dundee) and was shocked to hear this.

You lived in Glasgow GD. Both of my kids live/have lived there and we are not far away on the coast with the famous ice cream shop  ;D.

I used to stay a few miles outside Glasgow too. Worked in St Vincent St for a few years too, so very familiar with that area. Our first flat was south of Glasgow, near Eastwood Toll, however our area became more famous for it's awful high rise flats, than the private housing close by. High rise ones have since been bulldozed.

Just so sad.  :'(

The news is a bit more positive today.

The fire services are confident that they have saved the building and a good part of its contents.

I really feel for the students loosing so much work. No art show this year  :-\

I have just seen pics in DM and read story, its very sad for the students, I can well understand the loss of all their hard work and how devastating it is.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of my favourite Designers, I hope that as much as possible can be saved.
