Dry skin.
« on: May 10, 2014, 04:10:27 PM »

I've always had bouts of dry skin and I have always had flaky eyebrows and scaly eye-lids but it's getting a lot worse lately.
Someone said that flaky eyebrows and scaly eye lids is not just dry skin, but I dunno what else causes them.
I do get other patches of dry skin on my face also.
I have loads of tiny bits of white flakes all over my dark clothes.
It's my arms and legs mainly.

I am using aveeno cream on my face which seems to be helping, and I have started taking boots standard strength fish oil - one a day, in the hopes that it will stop this awful shedding and flaking.

My hrt is working except for feeling hot on a morning in bed, but I think its the warm weather thats doing that, so is menopause responsible for the dry skin also?
My diet is really good.

Any ideas?
Am I doing the right thing in taking fish oil? I just started it today.

Thanks

Oily fish won't do any harm  ;)

I notice dry eyebrows and around the eyes - when I can be bothered to take my eyes off the hair lip and chin  ;) ….. I use Nivea or other 'to-hand' creams which seems to settle any dryness ………. Sudocrem can be good too …….

Are you lacking Vit C? which can cause dandruff-type shedding too.

Does it itch and is it red at all? If yes, then it could be eczema. You'd need to see the dr for some very weak 0.5% hydrocortisone cream.

You could try tackling your arms and legs with a loofah or shower scrub mitt and using lots of body lotion- I like Neutrogena which is quite cheap and you can get an unscented one- or the Aveeno range is good too.

Very dry skin like you are describing can be a sign or low thyroid- so maybe keep that in mind. Have you had your thyroid checked lately?

Hi Ladies :)

I could be low on vitamin C, I never thought of that.

I don't notice any soreness or itchiness, but sometimes the dry skin on my chin and lower face is a bit pink.

I did have a blood test but I cannot remember when. I think it was a few months ago. I think thyroid function was part of the test but I cannot remember.

Do you think the doctors receptionist would be able to tell me from their records when I last had a thyroid test?

thankyou.

Yes, give your Surgery a call or drop by ……….

Up your fruit and veg intake? but not sugary fruits as this can lead to other problems …….

Use a cream in the mean-time.

I'm a big fan of argan oil for dry skin.  I use it on dry patches which occasionally develop on my cheeks - really does the trick.

I have been taking evening primrose oil, and star flower oil for three weeks now and my husband and daughter have noticed how soft my hands are, haven't had to put any hand cream on.

Also pure coconut oil on the skin, and on your hair before bed leave and wash in the am is brilliant for the hair.

Hi thanks for all the suggestions.

I use argan oil on my hair as it's dyed and argan oil deals with all the knots my hair gets in. My hair is more oily than dry.
I wash it about every three days.
I will ask the surgery when my last thyroid test is.
I don't really feel cold all the time though like people with low thyroid do.

Hi CKLD

No I hardly ever swim.
I'm not worried about my thyroid because I don't have other thyroid symptoms like feeling cold etc.

I used to swim a lot …….. can't be bothered these days  ::)

My knees are dry but that's probably because they never see the light of day!

I've always had dry skin and it's much drier now (especially after being in the sun - which I do when I can) - I think it is another menopausal symptom - thyroid aside.

I've got a small bottle of argan oil but haven't really known what to do with it! My hair is dry too but doesn't it make your hair greasy?

I don't know how often you shower or bath Dandelion but the current practice of daily (or more) showering using shower gels etc strips your body of its natural oils and is unnecessary - could be adding to the problem (also uses lots of water and electricity!!).  If you feel you want to shower just do so under tepid water without using products, and then lots of cream/rich body lotion as suggested.

A tiny amount of argan oil massaged into wet hair (after washing), especially into the ends helps it to look somewhat shinier.  Don't need much, a little goes a long way.  Use too much and it will look greasy though, have made that mistake a couple of times when in a hurry ;)

If the argan oil is good enough grade it's nice to use on dry skin too.  Not a cheap product to buy in UK but luckily hubby went out to Morocco on business a little while ago and stocked up with two huge bottles of the stuff for me.

One advantage of the menopause is that I no longer have greasy skin and spots which I suffered with right through from puberty to my 40s.  Thankful for small mercies.

Hi ladies and thanks.

I use argan oil on my hair.
It's dyed and it gets really tangled and the argan oil does nicely.
