FSH test results dont understand them
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:10:35 PM »

I have just got my blood results back, Dr says normal, no action. I knew there was no action anyway I asked for a confirmation really. I am 52 and 4 months and not had a period for 9 weeks, plus have many lovely meno symptoms. But the tests say
FSH                                 7.4iu/L
LH                                   17.01 iu/L
prolactin                           356mlU/L (70.0 - 566.0)
Oestradiol(4465)               3606 pmol/L
Progesterone                     2.08 nmol/L.

So on that basis I am imagining everything any advice on how to read them would be welcome.

Hi sarai

Re FSH, all I know is that a high value is indicative of menopause/peri-menopause. Yours looks low, which is why your doctor says normal

Your estradiol levels seem incredibly high and wonder if that figure is correct? Maybe during peri-menopause levels fluctuate way outside the normal range for the menstrual cycle?

Also one blood test is not reliable anyway.

Personally I am puzzled that you are having menopausal symptoms with levels that high (but I'm not an expert!). What symptoms are you experiencing (apart from delayed period) and has the doctor carried out other tests eg thyroid etc?

To be honest I cant believe I am not in the menopause at my age especially.
I had night sweats for at least 4 years and then some day time flushes around the time of my last period I had a week of hot daytime flushes every 15 minutes then nothing, none at night or in the day. I have put on weight around my middle, my boobs now are extremely painful again, I am miserable, stressed even anxious, my legs are holding water and I am forever at the loo.
quite frankly if I am not in it then I damn well should be.

I know nothing about those results but your symptoms certainly sound like mine.  Maybe your levels go crackers in the change, I certainly feel like mine do.  What were your periods like before you skipped?

Sarai my levels where really low, even lower than yours but I got HRT patches after one year of terrible symptoms as the 4th GP I went to was a meno specialist. The higher the score the more likely they will put you in the peri or meno 'box' for the FSH & LH levels. I am 52 this year btw. Hope that helps. Are you wanting meds or just confirmation of what is happening. B x

Bev I felt sure with my symptoms I was and wanted confirmation. Right now I feel worse than ever rotten symptoms and I am apparently 'normal'. I did not want HRT at this point, but I feel like I am having chronic pms, without period relief.

Well you are normal & take the confirmation from me & all the other ladies here what you already know. There is a shocking gap in the market on this subject & I have to say I was just as bad prior to last year. Read up on all those questions you have using the search option & sometimes accepting things goes a long way to dealing with them. B x
