Is this really VA ???

Hello everyone, help please... I went to see my gynae yesterday and came home feeling really positive. He prescribed Elleste Duet 2mg and Vagifem. I have been concerned that I have pudendal nerve pain as I have been having really bad burning pain in my clitoris and vagina at night when I lie down, it is better when I am walking around but the pain at night is unbearable. He reassured me that the burning pain was menopause related and would soon settle down.
Last night I had a night from hell - I literally felt like taking a razor blade and cutting my clitoris out to get some relief.
Can anyone else relate to this - does it get better?

You are not alone, and yes, it does sound like VA.
Elleste and Vagifem should start to help when they kick in.
If it is still awful after 2 or 3 weeks, see your GP or gynae again. You may need a different type of local oestrogen to Vagifem some ladies don't get on with it.
Also, avoiding long hot scented baths can help too.

Thank you Limpy - I don't know how much longer I can carry on like this. It is the clitoral pain at night that I find most difficult to deal with.
I am due to go back and see the gynae in two weeks so hopefully I will have started to get some relief by then.

Hi Judith - did your gynae mention the possibility of vulvodynia? This can cause clitoral pain. There is info here

Taz2 - that sounds more like it! VA is usually inside and deep ………..

Thank you Taz2 and CLKD. I am fearful that it is somthing like that or the pudendal nerve. I cannot get any relief. Have just been in the bath for 2 hours but it hasn't helped. I do have a throbbing deep inside but the pain manifests itself around my clitoris. It is so awful. Feel like going to A&E at the moment!

Let me try and describe it: Like a deep throbbing suction-like pain but it seems to hurt on the inside of my clitoris. It also makes me constantly have an urge to wee. I might go out for a walk (in the pouring rain) to see if that will give me any relief.

Did the walk ease the symptoms? The urge to pee can be a symptom of VA so using the Vagifem may well help.

It does sound more like vulvodynia than VA. What painkillers have you tried?

Just back from a walk and it seems to have eased things a bit. I have tried paracetamol, ibuprofen and Anadin Extra. All no good. The urologist I have been seeing mentioned that there were some painkillers that they could try that block the nerve transmitters (I think that's what he said) but he seems to have passed me over to the gynae now. Now I am sitting at my computer the pain is all flaring up again!

Ring your Surgery or speak to a Pharmacist and ask exactly how much pain relief you can take. It is important to be taking the 'correct' medication ……… and there are stronger ones from a GP than we can buy over the counter.

The razor blade feeling is typical of vaginal atrophy. Is this different from the clitoral pain which isn't as typical?
