Stockings for long haul flights, advice please
« on: February 23, 2014, 09:20:13 PM »

Hello ladies,
please can anyone explain the need for these special stockings and what exactly do they do?
Why is there a gap for your toes to be uncovered?

Can walking about during the flight be just as good?
Appreciate any advice

The adverts currently seem to go against what I was taught - that these types of stockings need to be from just belong the groin to the foot and not as shown in adverts from mid-thigh - which can cause swelling.

Ask your Practice Nurse? You may get these on the NHS anyway. I think movement is advised around the plane but surely when one stands up the plane leans ………..  ;) elevation of legs can ease any swelling too.

Perhaps the airline would have advice on what the clients need to wear?

It's usually socks that are recommended for long haul flights. The surgical ones with holes at the toes are awful as they don't breathe. I bought black cotton ones, think made by scholls. I really struggle with those even. By the time my legs & feet swell in the heat of the cabin, I'm demented with the itch.  Taking an aspirin before the flight is good too. Boots there chemist sell a wide range of in-flight socks. There are also exercises you can do whilst seated on a plane too.

The scholl socks are quite comfortable, but in all honesty I just get up every hour and walk the aisles or even have a jig if feeling energetic.

Get some funny looks though !!!!!! ;D

I always wear flight socks when going long haul. And take mini aspirin, and move about a lot, do ankle exercises. I don't sleep at all on planes so the journey is endless.
No idea how much it helps, but everyone seems to advise it. You should really measure your ankle and buy the right size socks. The 'one size fits all' ones not so good.
