Re: HRT Extra Progesterone required?

Well, according to the menu opposite, it doesn't exist.

I'm a bit surprised that with your problems you are only being advised by a nurse. Given that many GPs are clueless about types of HRT it's not surprising that a nurse may have got her wires crossed.

Can you not be referred to a gynae for some expert help?

Your other options include a complete change of product- from tablet to patch or gel- transdermal forms are safer in many respects although perhaps some drs give tablets as they are cheaper.

At 43 it is just possible that your own cycle is breaking through. The options perhaps include less oestrogen or more progestogen.

If you used an oestrogen  either patch or gel- you could then add a progestogen and could choose from several. Norethisterone is one which comes as 1mgs or 5 mgs. Some women have side effects with it. I was fine but as I am on HRT long-ish term ( over 5 years) I've recently changed to bioidentical Utrogestan - but am now having the same issues as you ( bleeding before the end of the course.)

Maybe you need some blood tests to see what is going on because it does sound as if the balance is not right.

Does the progestogen you take come separately? ie could you top up what you take in the pack?

Looking at your first post it seems that your problem is breakthrough bleeding- on many different types of HRT- which implies you are still producing your own oestrogen and need less of it or more progestogens.

Could you drop back to a 1mg oestrogen type and see how you feel on that?

How soon are you bleeding now and is it worth changing - as it's likely to take 3 months for a new type to settle in- or can you put up with the longer period?

Hi Sonka

I have seen somewhere on the internet that Femoston 2/20 does exist but I don't think its in the UK but Europe somewhere ie Italy or Spain.  I am taking Femoston 2/10 and sometimes I feel I need a bit more progesterone so I sometimes supplement with Emerita Progest Progesterone Cream but this has to be ordered online from Amazon.  When I first started HRT I mentioned to my GP about progesterone cream but they said because it isn't patented then they cant prescribe it.

I must admit I do experiment a bit as I was taking 2/10 and then reduced to 1/10 but felt I needed to up the dose again.  I feel I am trying to balance my own hormones as I am 53 and probably getting more into menopause than peri.  Perhaps your GP can find out more about extra progesterone?

I do think it is all about the balance of hormones and it is difficult because everyones needs are different.

There was one member we had who is no longer posting who was on full HRT and also took the mini pill as well. She did it primarily because she felt good on extra progesterone which is unusual. It is possible to combine both quite safely.

The extra progesterone could reduce your bleeding.

I would suggest emailing Dr Currie to ask for her expert advice. She is the founder of this site and email details can be found on the home page.
