Skin - variations on a theme
« on: February 04, 2014, 02:56:12 PM »

We know skin loses it's suppleness as we get older and the menopause seems to add to this unavoidable youth-loss. What products have members used with success, to help combat dry, thin and age-spotted facial skin? Cleansers, moisture cream including for the sensitive eye area.

Thanks!    8)

I'm a fan of Clinique Youth Surge, or Age Defence, and use their City Block spf 40 all year round to avoid sun damage. I've heard their products to help fade pigmentation are good.
Cheaper options are Olay- I like Regenerist 3-point and if you buy on Amazon it's often half price- go for the perfume free one.

I find l'oreal cleansers fine and cheap but if feeling flush I'd go for Clinique again - cleansing milk or cream- or REN.

 8) Some great names there thanks! The reason I ask is that for over 10 years I have used Nivea Cleanser/Toner and no moisturiser as my young skin was always prone to grease/spots etc. Probably not a good enough reason to avoid more pore clogging but I didn't need it until recently.

I decided to try Nivea Visage Daily Essentials light moisturising day cream last week. Woke up the next morning to swollen eyes/red chin/cheeks and looking quite "sensitive"!

I stayed on maximum Piriton for 4 days and have only just been able to return to cleanse/tone. I gingerly bought some Aldi Day Cream as I read it contained jojoba which was good for inflamed skin. It is lovely and for 1.99 a good price.

The past week has got me thinking more seriously about my ultra sensitive, thinning skin - hence the question! Clinique seems to come out on top but so do the Aveena products available.

I suppose it is a case of slowly does it until we find the right product but I thought it was worth asking!

BTW I have re-registered as Sadie49 but might have been here before as Sadie, Lacura or Hannah - it just wouldn't let me "in" using my new email address!

Thanks ladies!  :)

Hi Sadie

I have gad a variety of skin conditions in the past ( spotty, dry, sensitive) and tried many products over the years.
Then a friend recommended Liz Earle about 3 years ago and I've not looked back. My skin is healthy and glowing and I can't remember the last time I had any issues with it, in fact I am often complimented on my skin which isn't bad for a 51 menopausal woman!! All Liz Earle products are plant based, their cleanser is the best I have ever used and leaves my skin feeling super clean without being dry. They have a selection of moisturisers to suit any skin type and even now do a fab make up range to enhance a glowing complexion! Can't recommend it highly enough ( and no, I don't work for them!!).
They gave a great website if you fancy a browse.

For years I have used and still love Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturiser.  It gives the skin a lovely healthy glow without feeling greasy. I use a Boots Anti Aging Night Cream.  The Dramatically Different Moisturiser works out quite cheap as I find a bottle lasts a whole year and I get through at least 5 jars of Boots Night Cream in the same time. If I use anything with SPF sun block on my face I itch like crazy - very sensitive!!!
For the body moisturising you can't beat E45 lotion and there is a E45 Itch relief which is great.

Just for the record, Clinique City Block uses mineral sunscreen- titanium dioxide- not chemical sun screens as it is gentler and less likely to cause a reaction. it's very soothing and works really well as a primer underneath makeup bit like a tinted moisturiser.

Recently discovered Green Keratin Hyaluronic -C for all skin types. Its anti-aging, light and non greasy. I alternate with Lotil original.

Clinique will exchange or refund you if a product causes a reaction.

I've been using Aldi day cream for a few years now - my skin is quite sensitive but this seems to suit me well :)

I am having my usual January / February skin issues. Too much central heating and bloomin cold winds when I am out have resulted in dry chapped lips, dry skin around my nose and a good few spots. All in all I feel a right mess. It's always the same at this time of year and its another reason to hate winter. I need some sun to make things better. Got a long way to go yet  :-\

Two weeks ago I started having a itchy patch on my neck in the hairline, its not so bad now but the itchy patched have spread to inner arms and thighs and a patch just below my right breast, the  patches feel tender and sensitive, they are driving me mad especially in bed at night, have tried piriton syrup, anti histamine cream anti itch cream, no avail so saw the pharmacist this morning who looked at it my inner arms and said I needed to see my doctor as it was spreading, he gave me  calamine cream and Benadryl.

I am wondering if it is a delayed reaction to when OH collapsed twice and I was hysterical. It might be caused by stress.

I have had hives three times in the past and have had allergic skin reactions too, but really can't work out what this is, I bought some new sheets too today to see if it is the washing powder, Also bought some magnesium salts to put in the bath.

It's horrible when you don't know what the cause is.

Have you changed anything else SL, such as body lotions, shower gels for instance.

Have you started to take any new supplements or different foods. It does sound like a reaction to something but it could be what you are putting in as well as something external.
Put your calamine cream in the fridge. It's so soothing when it's cold.

Stopped it all HB even my estrogen patch When I bath I just use water and wash my bits with dermo hypo allergenic Sanex.

I just use baby oil afterwards as I have done  for ........ years  :)

It seems to calm down when I have a sliver of zopiclone as I did a few nights ago that's why I wonder if it is stress related. I am on high alert all the time with OH so much so that he is getting a bit annoyed, every time he makes a thud for some reason or is too long in the loo I shout out "are you all right" he's out to a  Directors  meeting tonight and I have to stop myself getting stressed until he's home again.

Its not on my face or neck either, but I itch all over even though its just in patches, itching is not pleasant at all, it will probably burn itself out hopefully, I tried to gat an appointment but non available  and its half day for surgery tomorrow.

If I had a cat I might blame it  ;D
