Any advice?
« on: February 03, 2014, 12:51:02 PM »

I am now in my 8th week of hrt and my 3rd of using estradot 50. Patches were going great but since Saturday (which co-incidentally was a patch change day), I have had racing heart symptoms and then last night I work up drenched in sweat. I am also on day 7 of ultrogestan. What I'm trying to figure out is whether the sudden reappearance of symptoms are due to influence of progesterone, although not had that before, a faulty patch, or just that I am not getting enough estrogen. I am still in peri, so appreciate that my own hormones are up and down but it's driving me mad and am feeling so depressed that I'm back to all the symptoms I thought had gone! :hotflash: :hotflash: :hotflash: :hotflash: :hotflash: :hotflash:

Oh Suzyq I really do get where you are coming from.

I started Femseven Conti a month ago and I must admit I have noticed when I change the patch I get the racing heart thing in the night.  I had it last night and splashed my face with freezing cold water and my heart rate dropped.  I only use half a patch.  It is definitely not as bad as not having any HRT.  Thinking whether it would be better to put a full patch on or whether to stop the HRT and see how it goes.

It is vile though isn't it?  Frightens the life out of me.

I stopped periods in Oct and the menopausal symptoms started at that time.

Hi shazzie

Sorry you are having the same thing! It's the worst thing ever... I could cope with the other symptoms, it's the racing heart that really gets to you.  Hopefully somebody will come along who knows more than we do. Why are you on just half a patch??

Well I was on a full patch but as I was getting the racing heart thing on a patch change day my GP said to try half a patch so see if it improves.  Well I thought I was doing ok until last night when I woke with the heart racing again.  I swished cold water round my face for about a minute and the heart rate dropped.  It is really frightening though.  And why does it happen while we are asleep or lying down.

I'm happy to try another patch. Everything was going great but I am now having non-stop symptoms again with my classic low estrogen headache! I have changed the patch just to see if it was faulty or somehow not stuck right, but if no improvement, back to doctors to see what next. To be honest, I'm really surprised cos I was feeling pretty good on estradot - very even!!

It's frustrating isn't it? I'm having the same problem. Every time I think somethings working for me, I start having symptoms again. I guess we have to keep teying until we find a good fit for us!

What have you tried karen??

I have made an appointment for tomorrow to get my levels checked as haven't had night sweats in months! Suspect they will be low. May ask him about femring as they seem to be well tolerated. I can't have any oral stuff, so my options seem to be running out!

Hi SuzyQ
Seriously - if you are feeling weird on Estradot then it's not the patch that's to blame!! Sounds like it's your own hormones as you are still peri. Changing to a different Estradiol patch wouldn't make any difference as they contain exactly the same ingredient - although Femseven are changed weekly so that might suit you more (they are larger patches though).

Progesterone should not give racing heart or sweats - it is a sedative - so Utrogestan should not cause those symptoms. Are you using vaginally?

Sorry I can't remember how far into peri you are and how long since last period etc? The further along the journey you get the less you should experience these symptoms. In the post-menopause, 50 mcg seems to prevent flushes and sweats in many women although some need higher (I'm just talking about alleviating these negative symptoms here - not what might be considered a feel-good dose!), and perhaps this is more the case the younger you are?

I don't think a blood test will give much information if you are peri and they are fluctuating - you would need to have several probably!

Thanks hurdity. I didn't think it was ultrogestan which I use vaginally.  I had same symptoms (racing heart, brain rushes) before starting hrt when my estrogen was very low @. 15 and thereabouts. I had several blood tests. As to how far into peri - no idea. I have been having symptoms for 5 years but very severe for last few months. Last period November and gaps of up to 80 days. I am 49.

Estradot was working really well but after I changed my patch on Saturday morning, my symptoms have been coming back non-stop. Hence my thought it could be not stuck properly or faulty. I have put a new one on to see if any difference but none yet.
