HRT seems to have stopped my diarrhoea
« on: January 30, 2014, 10:23:41 AM »

Hi

Although I am still flushing, I have noticed, that, since going from Femoston 1/10 to 2/10 my morning diarrhoea which has been plaguing me for a couple of years has seemed to dry up.

I always put my morning diarrhoea down to anxiety but I am now wondering if it is  hormonal.

Either way, I am so glad to see an end to early morning gut rot.

HRT can effect/benefit all areas of your lower abdomen.  I'm wondering if the fact you share your anxieties with us ladies and therefore relieve some of your stress may be having a positive effect on your bowel movements - I certainly feel better for sharing things with all my new friends on MM.  My older sister  (now 67) has had Crohns since her teens and she found symptoms (raging diarrhoea) was much better when she was able to take HRT!  DG x

Have you considered that you may have IBS. What you describe is a very common symptom.
HRT can help but you should get any changes in bowel habits checked out.

Hi DG and HB

I did have stool samples taken not so long ago to rule anything out, but there was nothing that came up.
My doctor did not mention IBS but I used to think how sorry I felt for IBS sufferers when I had my morning dose of gut rot.

Have you thought about making any changes to your diet? It does sound like IBS.
You could well be intolerant to certain foods especially gluten and dairy which are known to provoke IBS in a lot of people.
Progestogens relax the smooth muscles in the body and your guts are smooth muscle. If you take progestogens daily then this could account for it, or the oestrogen might help to build mucous membranes in the gut and make them less sensitive to whatever you are reacting to.

It's still worth experimenting a bit with diet though.

Progesterone relaxes smooth muscle and gives me constipation, so it must help if you normally get diarrhoea!!

Hi Thanks

I am only taking the oestrogen only phase of my HRT and don't start the oestrogen/dydrogesterone part until monday.
